NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Indeed they are :)

I don't want to steer you wrong here but seems like you are a fan of 80's Iron Maiden (me too) and the SuperD nails the "Two Minutes" tone IMO.
Check out "Back in Business (w/lead)" from our very own SlyD for a taste.

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

As you mentioned John Sykes tone, a set of Bareknuckle Cold Sweats may do what you're looking for :)

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Most of Sykes old, classic tones (the black Custom) were produced with Gibson "Dirty Fingers" pickups.

They are once again available through Gibson.

I'll check that clip out tonite.

I actually think I got a pretty good approximation on my own clip here http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=419896 scroll down to "Faded LP". Those are BurstBucker pros, but I think the Paula added the needed low end chunk that the Super D gave to Adrian's Lado (I'm going for his "live" tone, not the recorded version) The 59's are not quite agressive enough in the Hamer. My neck PAF to match w/ the SuperD should be here tomorrow and hopefully I can get them in this coming week :)

And Sykes is the ONLY guy I've ever heard who got a decent sound out of them..with Marshalls or Mesas. I had them in my pewer Explorer and they were horrendous. I can see why the re-issued them cos it's a NU-Metal scoopy sound lover's dream pup. I've had much better luck personally (at least for the neck pup) using BB pros, or a 59. For bridge position, the Gibson 500T in my Classic really nailed his Thin Lizzy era sound...closest I've come yet. Custom will get ya pretty close too (what my Explorer ended up having).

The clips I've heard of the Cold Sweat really sound much better than anything I was able to pull off w/ the DF's, though I do know construction-wise the instruments are diff (explorer vs LPC) and would not expect to "nail" the tone. I think like many great guitar players, much of the basic tone is in the hands, John in particular..he's using Gibson PAFs now and it's still "his" tone.

The Cold Sweats are out of my price range though right now, and If I was going BK, I'd be inclined to grab one of the more PAF-ish vibe pups...VHII, Emerald, etc. VHII has that wonderful "raw" PAF sound. But I have a feeling it's a hard pickup to play...i.e. def will show off your playing inadequacies (and lord knows I have enough of those already, I need something to cover them up :D )

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

I can get a VERY Sykes like tone with pretty much any Les Paul.....regardless of pickups.

My Koch can do the 87 Whitesnake tone to a tee. I have to admit that when I get that going on I am so proud of myself that I feel like a pea****.

I forgot about these when I posted... AJ has some clips that sound great, but they are in a strat, and those are the only clips I've ever heard of these pups.
bill lawrences sound great in any guitar (speaking about the L500 series)

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Its funny cause I have been trying Bil Lawrence pickups for years (the real ones not the fakes) and cannot get into their sound. Good stuff just not for me I guess...

Cool clip! I had no idea you decided to get a SuperD! Adrian on "22" & "Powerslave" on the "Live After Last" album is top shelf! Not sure if he played the Lado though, maybe the Deluxe & Destroyer on those respectively?
Those Burstbuckers have a bit of that similar "edge" you can get from the SuperD if you know what I mean.

Thanks :) BB Pros have some good bite, and that def helps...they are not as crisp as a SuperD from what I remember, but it's close. I've actually had the SuperD for awhile now. Originally bought it for my Firebird, but never put it in.

Do you mean Live After Death? I had the video which was recorded either the night before or the night after the Album (Long Beach Arena). On the Vid ,he basically only pulled out the Les Paul for the older tracks at the time(The Trooper, Hallowed Be Thy Name, etc), IIRC, every song from Powerslave on the vid was the Lado, everything else was the Les Paul...No Destroyers in sight on the Vid at least. 22 Acacia was recorded at Hamersmith, and none of the Hammersmith stuff was on the vid...I'd say that was his Paula, from the sound of it, but I'm not positive.

Neck sound I've never had issue with really, but some bridge pups are better than others, IME. BB pros actually work quite well.

I've heard of these amps, but know nothing about them..care to elaborate? :)

Re: NOT DUNCAN...NOT DiMARZIO....then what?

Honestly Jeff; if I keep being unhappy with different bridge humbuckers (85 just isn't sounding as good as the 707's), I'm going to break down and order a Bareknuckle to try out. Probably will after X-mas, when the cash flow is at it's high-point for the year.

Tom Andersons and if you really do feel like shelling out some cash the PRS p'ups are Godly.

Want to hear a little secret that pickup people all over the world know?

The PRS pickups you are raging about are Gotoh pickups. They have been using them on their guitars for years now. Early ones were wound in house and they still make pickups for their endorsers but the rest...Gotoh.

When you take a few pickups apart you start to be able to recognize makers.

:laugh2: putting very middy pups in an already middy guitar is beyond me...but no doubt they cut through the mix well.

I knew it! Would a guess from sometime in the mid 90's be close? That and the truss rod change:blackeye:

I couldnt tell you exact dates, I dont know PRS well enough. But it seems that a LOT of things changed at PRS in the early mid 90's so that wouldnt surprise me.

I am NOT a PRS hater by the way, I think they are way cool guitars.
