Nothing rhymes with Orange ...

Re: Nothing rhymes with Orange ...

I thought Chucky was the tiny terror.

[blabbermouth is down so I have to use all my jokes here today]

Yeah I made the mistake of playing a Rockoverb 50 and now I want one bad. What's interesting, atleast to my ears is that they sounded great with a Marshall cabinet.

Re: Nothing rhymes with Orange ...

I have a single channel AD30 and absolutely love it!

With the gain set low and volume up, it has a great glassy/jangley clean tone that I prefer over alot of Fender amps I've used!

If you crank the gain up to around 6 or 7 it crunches up superbly! I like to set the amp with gain at about 3 and volume to suit so that if I play a guitar with humbuckers and/or play a Strat or Tele quite hard, the sound is still quite clean but has a little grit in it or if I play softer it cleans up really well.

While setting the amp like this, I use a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 for a crunchy tone (when mixed with the amps own grit) or a G2D Custom Overdrive when I want a thicker sounding Overdrive. As much as I love the tone of both of these pedals on a purely clean amp, they really do come to life when used with an amp that's set a little gritty :)

If anyone wants to hear the Orange with gain at about 7, for that gritty/jangley tone I mentioned earlier, then go to www.myspace.com/forthisdaymusic and listen to Message. The intro guitar on that song (and used on every other song I recorded) is the Orange head with a MESA 4x12 with Vintage 30's and my Fender Strat with a Bareknuckle Crawler humbucker in the bridge.

For the other songs on Myspace, the other guitarist in the band used my Orange head, the MESA cab and my Strat for all his guitar parts whereas I used the Strat with BKs and my Gibson LP with Seths but for amps I used a cranked Plexi and/or my JCM800 split channel head for my Overdrive tones. I also used the Plexi for my clean tones instead of the Orange for a different sound :)

One of those amps that I've never tried, but always wanted to....

What does the tone compare to...Marshall/Hiwatt/Vox mix?

If a Marshall JTM 45 and a Mesa Mark IIc+ had a baby, it would be a lot like an Orange AD30.

Thanx mate :)

I know it was a bit of self promotion, but I felt it was intopic so as to provide a sound clip of the Orange amp. If it happened to be my band that played the soundclips, so be it :D

Brow, the tone in that song screams "ORANGE!" to me. Very pleasing crunch with no strong emphasis on a particular frequency. Nice song too!

Thanks for your compliments :)

I do find that Orange amps can be a little bass heavy, but it's nothing a little tweak won't usually sort out :)

Re: Nothing rhymes with Orange ...

The first time I heard an Orange was in(showing my age)in 1971. I saw Wishbone Ash playing in Clemson, SC touring with the Allman Brothers. If you want to hear Orange try to pick up some of Wishbone Ash's early albums like "Pilgramage," "Wishbone Ash" or "Argus."

Those are really nice tunes there Brow. Sounded very Beatle-ish (dont take offense if you dont like the Beatles, I mean it as a compliment, the vocal styles, the piano, and with a bit more rockin in the guitar department).

And.. damn.. now I really wanna go and try that Orange..

I've heard that complaint too. Sometimes people say they sound "sludgy". I think these people must leave the EQ parked at 5,5,5 ... the Orange EQ is very responsive and powerful, much like a Mesa in that regard.

Thanx Tim.

The beatles are a BIG influence on the singer, so it's not too surprising to hear some of their influence in his songs. There are other songs we do which are more acoustic based and with Wurlitzer Pianos etc which to my ears are alot more 'Beatles-y' than those I have up on myspace.

I wouldn't say it's a complaint, but it's something to be aware of when EQing these amps. I personally have Treble and Mid at about 6 with Bass at around 4.5/5 just to take a little of the bass boom out :)

I'm sure cab selection goes a long way too.
