I finally saved enough scratch to buy the 'V' kit I've been lusting after for years, only to find out PGK won't sell them anymore because of what I think is a potential lawsuit issue. I always had a love/hate thing with Strats. I love the feel, scale, and the mojo - but I hate the pickups, radius, and the fact that they just won't stay in tune when the bridge floats.
I opted to build a Strat better suited to my particular tastes. I'm very happy with the Les Paul kit I built a few years ago from PGK, and I know their wood is top-notch. I like the reviews/vids I've seen of the Duncan P-rails, and decided to pay the extra money for a prewired pickguard from 920D on eBay. I'm not afraid of a soldering iron, but I have next to no spare time looking after a 4 year-old (....which is why you haven't seen much of me here lately ...). The tone knobs are push-pull, so there are lots of options. I think the Gotoh Wilkinson VSVG trem is the best mix of old and new and stays in tune very well, plus the bar is drop-in, like a PRS, with zero play (also always hated screw-in whammy bars on Strats).
I used Keda dye, pretty much straight red mixed nice and strong, then 2 really thick layers of Tru-oil with several thinner coats - just enough to make it shine a little bit. The tuners are staggered Hipshot locking ones and work great.
I'm very happy with the finished product. I decided to make the headstock design another Space Invaders character, like it's PGK LP sibling. I can't recommend PGK enough. Here's a link to the kit I bought.....
