Numerous OK Guitars or a Few Good Men?

Guitarist

Mesa-ologist
I was at my local GC again and I was just thinking it'd be kind of nice to have numerous middle line guitars to stick SDs in and just have in different tunings, assign to different genres, and whatnot. But then again, I was thinking the bill would be huge and it would end up costing as much as that one Heritage Les Paul hung high above the others. I'd personally take the one masterfully built, beautifully playable, and saWeet axe over the numerous friends. What do you prefer?

I'd search out a bunch of nicely built, well playing cheaper guitars. Charvel model 5 and 6's. USA, neck thru, Kahlers and Floyds, great necks, great stock pickups, 500-600 dollars. Great steals. And all those old 80's Charvel VH type strats, one bucker, one floyd. Or Rondo's!

Re: Numerous OK Guitars or a Few Good Men?

I wish those automatic tuning systems were A LOT cheaper so I wouldn't have to worry about this. I see where you're coming from. I love multiple tunings, so I just have to suck it up and if I want to play them live, I'll have to tune during the gig.

I think now I'm ready for a custom shop guitar that does it all. You can play around with low end instruments, but when you've played it all and there are a few expensive ones that really stand out, I think they're well worth it. I hate switching guitars and I hate having to limit choices, so why not save up for an amazing instrument that's versatile enough to nail anything I want?

Sorry to burst your bubble, but charvel Model 1-7´s and 125-750xl´s were made in Japan. The only difference to the USA Soloists of the period is the rosewood fretboard instead of ebony (and the logo). A real USA Charvel (pre ´86, aka. "San Dimas Charvel") will cost you well over 1000 bucks if it´s not a parts mutt, and only about 100 exist with original Floyds (Kahler didn´t exist yet).

Anything USA and Neck-thru is a Jackson or a prototype ;)

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program.... I prefer "A Few Good Men", and my axes show it, nothing under a Charvel Model 6 (with an unbelievable refinish). And only she, the Fernandes Rhoads, and my LP Gothic are "lower end", the rest are USA Jacksons and Gibsons or homemade strats

i am pursuing the 'few good men' of mid quality strategy (slowly ... very slowly) ... i am pretty sure it would require a major lottery win for me to ever have a guitar that cost over $1000 ... as much as i love to look at PRS's with 10 tops and birds, i just cant see it ever happening .. over the next 5 yrs, i guess i might be able to pick up a used tele here or a used strat there ... i think a Heritage LP and 335 over the next 10 yrs would be the outer range of expectations

cheers,

Get one 'great' guitar for the money you intend to spend on 5 mediocre ones...

You won't regret it - you will if you do it the other way...

Get one great one.. then when you have the money available.. get ANOTHER great one. :laugh2:

At 41yoa & baby #3 on the way, I'm afraid my MIA Tele & Guild D-55 are gonna be the best guitars I'll ever own........But who needs more than that???? Everything else is just CAKE!!! :)

A few good men.

You can really tell the difference once you play a high end USA made guitar or it's equal. I'm not going to say that there are not high quality guitars made elswhere, I'm just not familer with them.

Before I bought my Hardtail that I would like to get a bunch of $500 guitars and do different things with them. Now that I have owned my Hardtail I'm spoiled. Even when I pick up a nice axe like a Schecter or mid grade Ibanez, or Epi....it just doesn't feel as good. There are always exceptions....but in general the appointments and components are hard to beat in a high end guitar.

I have decided to buy one of each of the "classic" guitars.

Les Paul
Strat
Tele
PRS McCarty or CU22

Then I'll go from there.

I've got a Hardtail and a USA Strat now. LP is probably next, then PRS.

Look how many years Clapton used 'Blackie' for. It's not that he was short of dosh.

Really? Oops...thanks for the correction. They're still nice as hell for the money!

Re: Numerous OK Guitars or a Few Good Men?

Well, it seems bluntly obvious what we prefer now... thanks everyone!

Re: Numerous OK Guitars or a Few Good Men?

I like having a few for sure but certainly having a few with quality is the a better option.

Re: Numerous OK Guitars or a Few Good Men?

I'd say don't be afraid to spend a little extra for something that you know will stay with you. I just made a deposit on a 1600 Heritage Les Paul from Jay Wolfe. I might get a truss rod cover engraved with my name - we'll see.

Its good to have a few decent guitars - but you have to have something great to start with before you begin upgrading. The guitar must play smoothly and resonate nice, then you could put in nice pickups, etc...

I'm personally never afraid to invest - and I set aside a budget for it, rather than settling for something I can get right now, and upgrade later.

Oooh, the envy, I love Heritage Pauls. Get the name on the truss rod, with an axe like that - spoil yourself. Congradulations!

Re: Numerous OK Guitars or a Few Good Men?

I'm a little late on this one but don't even think about setteling for less you will just continue to gas until you get the one.
