Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I have four and feel overwhelmed. Still, I don't want to sell any.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I guess I feel justified for having multiple because I enjoy using a number of tunings. I'm at 8 electrics right now, after selling off a few of my projects last year to make room for some new additions. They're mostly the same model.

The problem now is that I want to experiment with pickups and body woods at different tunings. And heaven help me if I get in to Teles or 7 strings or something different.

I mean, I'm pleased with what I've got...but I get GAS often. I think the only thing that saves me is that I'm cheap and won't consider a purchase unless it's a terrific deal. Otherwise I'd probably be swimming in guitars.

I guess I've never really thought about it. But my answer would be... Nah!

"Too many guitars"? Blasphemy! You should get an infraction for such talk.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

yes, if you really should not be sending the money for your particular income strata. Thats different than wasting money on a bunch junk guitars, hey, if thats your thing and you can afford it, knock yourself out.
Good guitars are an investment, but how much of your net worth should you invest- it's a slippery slope. Another thing t consider is how secure is your investment?- can the guitars be potentially stolen?

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

That's not much of an argument. If you have 1 guitar and it gets stolen, now you have 0 guitars, and that's not acceptable.

I might recommend keeping multiple comparable rigs in a variety of different undisclosed locations, on the theory that it's far less likely you'll be hit in multiple locations at the same time. YMMV

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

- Main guitar
- Backup of main guitar
- Guitar with a tremolo
- Guitar with high output pickups
- Guitar with low output quirky pickups

I don't like to have a lot of stuff lying around and eventually sell anything that isn't getting used.

If your wife's car is unreliable...you have too many guitars.

if your kids don't have shoes, or are going hungry, or going without intellectually stimulating toys...you have too many guitars.

If your elderly parents are scraping by on Social Security and living off kibble...you have too many guitars.

Get the picture?

I was thinking on this same line.

One main guitar with standard tuning.
One backup to take to practice or around, in case something happens to it
One with half-step down
One in double drop D
One with a tremolo

The hot, vintage and other pickups more or less get sorted out "automatically" into those guitars

Interesting thought, is your comment of "a bunch of junk guitars" related in any way to those Epiphones that I mentioned?

I'd love to spend/invest money on some Gibsons, but I cannot afford it and also do not justify the price difference for the quality improvement.

In any case, I wouldn't buy more guitars than I can use or afford, and if it comes to money issues I could sell them for the same price. I look carefully before for a good deal in good condition before buying.

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

The only gripe my wife has ever had about my compulsive gear collecting is the space it takes up. The bills get paid, the kids are spoiled, and money goes in the bank.

I know several colleagues who spend more in a year on sports tickets than I ever have on gear.

I was thinking

Red guitar
Blue guitar
Brown guitar
Another blue guitar
Green guitar
Daphne blue guitar
Brown acoustic guitar you play BLUES on
Blue acoustic guitar
Flame blue guitar
Blue green guitar ( just a blue guitar with out of phase pickups)

See where I'm going

Re: Is there such a thing as having too many guitars?

I have five that are whole and ready to play, and I have three "builds" in "progress". So I only need three more after that. For me, any additions to those eleven might be too many, but ask me again after I have all eleven usable. The limit is likely to change.
