Nut Sizes

Can someone explain the different nut sizes to me please? Does it all come down to string spacing? Or is the width of the neck affected as well?

My nuts are like Walnuts. When it comes to spacing, they fit perfectly in a chick's eye sockets. As far as the width of the neck, I could care less...I'm more of a depth of her throat kinda guy. But that's just me.

It affects both the width of the neck and the string spacing. I have a Fender acoustic with a rather narrow nut width and I can end up accidentally muting neighboring strings with my fingers on it.

EDIT: mainly neck width, but since you can't put strings wider than they'll fit on the neck without "fretting off the side", it also affects string spacing.

this is why a nut should be made to fit the guitar.... Stew Mac's Nut Width ruler helps a fair bit to find the string spacing for any nut width...
