O.K. Which attenuator is the best

Re: O.K. Which attenuator is the best

It's like having a separate attenuation knob for the low end/low mids and the high mids/high end. I usually set the highs down a bit compared to the lows.

Oops, we have the same thing, I just have the 100watter. I actually keep the mids/high on about 7 and lows/mids at 1 because the bass knob pulled on the AOR can make small thing fall off the coffy table, really, it can! I love mine, it really preserves the tone, compeletly transperant. I thought you've had this thing:

Re: O.K. Which attenuator is the best

i have a Dr Z Airbrake ,and it is amazing.
i use it with my Peavey VTM60 and 4x12 to get awesome saturated tube tone at practice volume.
now, the VTM is still loud.....but not painfully so.

with the Airbrake i dont get any of the tone issues others have mentioned from their attenuators.

i highly recomend the DR Z Airbrake.

Well ..... I don't know about shiva as it is a master volume amp right? But you are right a Komet with attenuator is like doing a Charlize Theron with the thickest lifestyle found ..... it should be outlawed.

oh man, that's good!

Re: O.K. Which attenuator is the best

One feature in particular that makes me like the MASS, is that it can be used as a dummy load.

For example: you set your amp to a 4 Ohm impedance, connect your 8 Ohm cab to one speaker output and the MASS on 8 Ohm and the speaker output on 0, using it as a dummy load.
Half of your volume is soaked up by the MASS, while the other half goes to your cab, without anything in it's way ! I have a buddy who actually put MASS motors in his 2x12" cab. So his amps are driving a 4x12", you hear only two of 'em.

Personally, I really like the colouration of the MASS. It makes it sound so much more natural. Search the Internets (all of 'em) for information on the Fletcher Munson curve, Ted used to have a great bit of information on this listed. You experience the same sound quite different at different volumes. The MASS compensates for this and let's you experience the "loud sound at a lower level". That's the best way I can put it. :)

If I were you, I'd wait a little for Ted to release the MASS III. It'll have bass, middle and treble controls for the attenuated output !

Haha, that would be tempting yes ! :) But with its controls for low-mids and mids-high, your LiteMass already has control over what's happening with the attenuated signal.

Re: O.K. Which attenuator is the best

I have a MASS and a Hotplate. IME, which one is preferable depends on the amp.

Re: O.K. Which attenuator is the best

I think I must have version 1.0 of the Mini-Mass. It's an unfinished box with two cables coming out of it, a knob, a toggle switch and a cheesey sticker. Works pretty well but you guys have got me thinking that it's time for an upgrade...

Re: O.K. Which attenuator is the best

I have a Mini-Mass and it sounds asstacular. It makes everything sound muffled and 1-dimensional. A good master volume sounds much better.

I use it today as a dummy load when working on my amps.

When used to make a loud amp quiet enough to play in an apartment, you're right.

One dimensional and very uninspiring tone.

However, if you want to make a 100 watt amp sound more like a 30 watt (which is still loud!) the Weber will do that and sound pretty good...although less "open" and 3-dimensional, more compressed and fizzier than the original unattenuated sound.

I never use my attenuator...like Bludave, I just use smaller amps that fit the room and situation.
