OD Boost for high gain amp

I'm gonna be getting a Jet City JCA100 head in the next couple of weeks, and I wanna get a boost pedal for solos in high gain mode.

Was thinking of getting a Boss SD-1 or an OD-3, but considering how i'll be using it (volume boost/mid-treble boost, and additional gain) which would be the better option? Pros/cons of each?

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

I don't know, I've always been partial to my TS9 (Been thinking about getting the keeley mod on it) But seriously post a review on the JCA. I've been chomping at the bit to get a new toy and I'm really thinking about that JCA100H. Might be my christmas present to myself.

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

Don't rule out a plain ol' clean boost. They give you just enough boost to get above the mix and don't really color your tone any. EHX has pretty good one for around $35.00.

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

I use my Fulltone OCD more often than my TS type od's for boosting my gain channels. I have a V4 model, it has a toggle switch with two modes so the pedal can either operate as a clean boost or a fat overdrive.

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

Why not simply get an EQ pedal to bump a specific frequency up a tad? I mean, if the amp is high-gain, it should have enough gain for solos, so adding gain to that strikes me as odd.

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

nobody actually answered my question!

But in an attempt to steer it in the direction that i might be able to get what I was looking for in the first place....

I don't see the point of spending close to $200 to get a coveted tube screamer. It doesn't make sense to me. I want a simple little overdrive pedal that I can use to boost my amp.

I plan on using it with just a hair or two of gain, so my solos sound more fluid and thicker than my regular rhythm sound. But I also want to get some mid/treble boosting action going on, which is the whole reason I'm looking at overdrive pedals, and not clean boosts or EQs. I do NOT plan on cranking the level control, because I don't want to jump out right outta the mix and drown out everyone else. I hate when guitarists do that. What I want is for the boosted mids/trebles to shift my tone to a point where it sounds like it's standing out more, without necessarily being louder sounds like a job for an EQ, I know, but I also want that slight gain boost (again, why i'm looking at overdrives, not distortions or clean boosts).

I've read that the SD-1 is a bit thinner sounding than the OD-3, but that it's better for boosting amps in the way I've described. The OD-3 seems to be a better pedal for going straight into the front of a clean amp.

Now, I unfortunately haven't played either, so I'm asking again for some opinions on these two...or anything that compares to them that's not retardedly overpriced just because of the name on the box.

With what guitar? I say first hear the amp used with your own your guitar and then see if you actually need something.

Get an MXR Zakk Wylde OD pedal works well for a clean boost and a OD boost. ALso Seymour DUncan Pickup Booster or MXR Micro Amp work well. All could be had for around $50 or less.

Neither of those really add anything to the gain, treble, or mids.

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

If you're looking to add more gain and a slight eq shift, not boost volume, an SD-1 will do the trick.

I'd say try that out first, see if it works for you, if you don't like how it sounds, return it and look towards the ts-9, ts808 or even the maxxon models, which are just as good as the old ibanez ones.

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

i have to be honest and say when it comes to my needs of boosting my Marshall heads for solos a new Vox Satchuator has done the job amazingly!!!!! OD's don't do it for me for a lot of sounds This vox is nice for goosing the front end...

Re: OD Boost for high gain amp

never tried any with your head specifically, but with everything from a DSL to a dual recto, I've found the SD-1 and the bad monkey to be the best od's for clean boosting or tightening up the bass
