Oddball Gibson Thread....

Re: Oddball Gibson Thread....

Darn. I am in the middle of searching for the right Vixen. I've got to have one (which I will refinish in the gloss paint of my choice when I do get it). I am a sucker for wraparound tailpieces on Les Pauls. I played one before, but didn't have the budget to get it at the time.

Re: Oddball Gibson Thread....

The BFG line of guitars was a cool concept. I would have done a few things differently though: no inlays, no plastics, raw neck, etc. They are pretty cool as-is though.

Re: Oddball Gibson Thread....

Marauder! Unfortunately for this thread, I modded away all the things that make it so odd: bizarre pickups (slanted single coil in the bridge, weak/thin humbucker midway between middle and neck position), odd shaped pickguard, blend pot with a chicken head knob instead of a three-way switch (at least the year mine was built) but how can you NOT love a Les Paul Special body with a Flying V headstock??

This internet photo is EXACTLY what mine looked like stock.

I still have to swap out the pickups to the JB/JAZZ set
And some other mods
But look at the back on this

Gibson imitating Fender (in the seventies, while Fender was imitating Gibson with the Tele Deluxe electronics)

Anyone remember the Gibson Eye??? One part SG, one part Strat, one part WTF???

This beautiful example is #25 out 350 ever made, & I’m guessing about 150 that ever actually sold...

Believe it or not it’s a pretty fun guitar & it plays great! It sounds like a mix of a old SG & Explorer, but sits on you like a Stratocaster which makes it incredibly easy to play! Plus let’s face it, how many post 2005 Gibson’s do you see with a real Ebony board???

Re: Oddball Gibson Thread....

Yeah the Gibson Eye is a real oddball Gibson. At first sight it reminded me of some kind of fish. Looks cool.
And you even have a matching strap.

Re: Oddball Gibson Thread....

I think the Gibson Firebird X is a real oddity. You might as well glue a pedal board to a guitar. It is a nice guitar and all but you need a university degree to operate this beast. And why did they only go with 23 frets instead of the full 24? It was supposed to be a revolution in guitar playing but I say it's just an exercise in futility.;)

The Firebird X was a friggin abomination!!!

I’m all about originality but my god!!!🙈

Any guitar that requires a month long course to operate, & let’s face it looks like this, probably isn’t going to change much of anything other than making the world question your sanity...

RIP Henry J.

You should have just hung it up & retired with a little dignity at the end of the millennium...
