Oddball/weird gutiars?

Post em up. Somebody started this over on the HFC and I thought it was a cool idea. Tiescos/Vantages/Corts/Hondos/Italian-stuff/cheapos/underappreciated American stuff...bring it!

Gibson V90: 24 frets, 25.5 scale, mahogany/maple/ebony, Steinberger leg rest, tummy cut, factory Floyd, H/S config, vol/tone/3way w/ bridge coil splitter. All that's stock. Now it's lost the tone control and had a P90 in the neck, as well as probably the ugliest HS repair known to man. 4k? 5k? No. $200 before I destroyed the hs joint and had this repair done. At least it was a cheap repair.

I've got another that's much cleaner that's only had 1 hs repair and the neck stripped. IMHO, these are probably some of the coolest guitars they ever made, yet totally overlooked.

I don't even really know what model Cort it is, but it's pretty cool. The stocker pickups sucked and I grabbed a BUNCH of these things from EZ at NAMM 3 years ago-hence the twin L500XL/R setup. Preamp, brass EVERYTHING, phase switch. Just got it back from a fresh refret of the 6er with 6100s but the 12s got a few frets popping high. It actually plays and sounds great, but it's a monster, for sure. Is this Matsumoku-made?

ive always been fond of the deluxe version airlines that eastwood guitars makes. you know, the one with three single coils cased in humbucker shells, individual volume and tone controls for each pickup, and then a master volume. bigsby for a bridge, and i believe a 5 way switch too. awesome.

(I really dislike all those Italian funky shaped guitars from the 60's and 70's. I thought the Italians were supposed to have style!)

It's a Hohner. I contacted them to find out what it was, they said it was a made in USA prototype of a guitar they went on to produce in Korea... but they didn't make any in Blue. It is a maple body, maple neck and of course, maple board. So it's proper bright. The neck is a narrow fretboard so the strings are quite close together, the profile is a chucky boat shape. The bridge pickup is quite beefy, and if i double track it in the studio i can do the heaviest of metal riffs. The neck pickup is vintage telecaster mojo. It has binding around the body and headstock. The scale is 24.75".

I love it. But i'm thinking of getting some custom shop Duncans in it sometime soon.

I really like that guitar!!!

I wish I had a few pics of some guitars I used to own. Ones I got cheap when I was younger and couldn't afford $800-$2000 for a guitar.
1.) A Rennaisance (not the Rick Turner guitars). Made in New England somewhere. A total "That 70's guitar". Brass hardware, active tone controls, Dimarzio Super Distortion/PAF humbuckers, double creme of course, curly maple neck with laminated strips of rosewood and some other darker wood, rosewood headstock overlay. The most striking feature of the guitar though was its oddly shaped plexiglass body.

2.) Nady Lightning. Black, 24 fret neck through shredder with locking whammy, two humbuckers, wide, flat neck with very tall frets. Like playing a scalloped fretboard. Built in wireless transmitter. That neck was a great shredder neck, but it had some uneven frets. I took the guitar to a local guitar tech to level the frets and he ruined it totally.

3.) Washburn A10-V. These I think a lot of you have seen. Body style was reminiscent of an Explorer. Non-locking whammy which never stayed in tune. I liked the neck and the fretwork. It really played well, but other things like the pickups and trem were terrible.

4.) A Treker shredder axe. 24 fret bolt on neck with Treker's stress-free neck system. Kahler Spyder trem. H-S-H pickup configuration. Another guitar that was very easy and comfortable to play, but this one had a few dead notes on the neck.

Just as the 1980's were the death of music and hair... the 1960's was the death of design.

1960's architecture is a prime example:

Agreed on the 1960s architecture faux pas. How many beautiful early 20th century storefronts in the midwest USA were ruined in the 60s by remodeling.

But IMO, design reemerged in the 90s and is alive today. While this guitar may be too abstract for the traditionalists, there are still guys who are trying to think out of the box. That red polymer body is actually 93% wood fiber.

My old Melody Maker:

I did the "Pat Travers" double-HB install myself, including a hand-cut pickguard and a 1/2" hole drilled right through the back when I forgot to set the depth guage on the drill press. This was a truly great, albeit truly ugly guitar. The neck comprised the biggest piece of mahogany I've ever seen.

I bought it around 1980 for $125, added the Badass bridge and Schallers, and stuck in a Dual Sound and Gibson HB that I had lying around. Great guitar on the cheap.

It's maybe #2 or #3 on my "Never Shoulda Sold It" list.

my '62 melody maker, I absolutely Lurve this thing.... I cut a quick pickgaurd out of plexi glass, and routed for P-90's....everything else is bone stock/original...she sounds/plays as nice as ever, loaded with Seymours 1N and 1B...and has the biggest piece o mahogany for a neck i've ever played, comfy as hell...and the Brazilian rosewood fretboard is to Die for.

next up my Atilla Balough "oddesy" guitar...it's killer all brass 80's guitar and plays like butta..currently don't have a pick of it (new lappy) but if ya do a search it should pop up.

(yes, Gretsch actually made a guitar this ugly, but the headstock wasn't *as* bad...though Gretsch's was pretty bad.)

I used to have the S-60D (two single coil version: same color and knob layout as photo). It was a very light-weight guitar that sounded kinda cool in some settings. I bought it for $150 in 1990 at a tiny guitar shop in New Brunswick, NJ. I ended up using it in a trade for a Strat (which met its demise when I smashed it on the floor in a rage...different story). I now realize I should have kept the Guild and forgotten about the Strat. Also, I didn't know at the time that it had Dimarzio SDS-1 pickups...I just thought it sounded neat all fuzzed out and trying to play "Another Piece of My Heart" incorrectly.

Thank you very much! It is odd, just from the backstory (or lack thereof).

The guitar is still with Roman, but it should be done very soon. The original estimate was 1 month, but it's turned into three months. Basically his buddy Ace (Frehley) came by with a few projects and that's taking his time. He asked if I needed it quickly, I said no, and in return he's doing a ton of extra work to the guitar. New custom made pickup rings, rewired, everything straightened up, new nut, basically just fixed as good as it will ever be. He also fixed the neck heel, and filled in the cracks.

But the guitar (as you all know) will have ebony board, massive stainless steel frets, and nice new aged cream binding throughout. It's going to look nice.

Ohh, yeah, definitely worth the wait for all those extra goodies!!!

Recent experience has taught me that good wiring and joints are every bit as important as a good pickup.
I could NOT believe how much signal is lost in crappy wire and poor solder joints!

Ace Frehley?! The Green One would definitely qualify as legitimately odd if your guy were to throw in an Ace smoker mod as well.
