Oh you guys are gonna loooove this...

Check out what just popped-up in my neck of the woods:

Explorer III.jpg

It's too much money for me at the moment (and I'm not sure I'd pay 1500$ for it anyways) but it sure is cool to see one of those.

Re: Oh you guys are gonna loooove this...

What year is it supposed to be? Kinda reminds me of something that Fret-King might try.

Re: Oh you guys are gonna loooove this...

I can't say as I recall ever seeing one of those.

That is unusual.

It's an Explorer III, I read a long while ago that they were made for a short while but never saw one anywhere. Not the kinda shape I associate with p90s either.

No idea about the year...

Re: Oh you guys are gonna loooove this...

Its a Custom Shop guitar from when all the employees @ Gibson were let go, and only the Custom Shop was operating. They were factory run outs using left over parts up. I've got a genuine 1985 Les Paul Double Cut (XPL)with the same explorer neck. They are great guitars, plus most had the funky Kahler trem, and this is a stop tail which is good. 1500 is way too much for a plain top no binding though, especially on C-list IMO.

Alot of these are Alder bodies. Not a bad thing either. I had a standard explorer bitd with the big ass slab of Alder. Massive sounding guitar with incredible sustain....sounded even better once I put a sh5/sh1 set in it.

Very nice, rare and odd looking explorer with the P-90 style pups in it. Bet it sounds just as good as it looks.

Good catch on the Explorer III. Any chance of playing it? Gibsons from that era are so hit and miss I'd never buy one without kicking the tires first. I haven't played many, but my experiences were pretty much the opposite of JeffB. All of the 80s alder Explorers I've played sounded like nasal crap compared to a decent '76 reissue.

Re: Oh you guys are gonna loooove this...

I don't buy ANY guitar without giving it a rundown FIRST and that includes playing it for about 45 minutes before the cash register gives me that total. Only 1 exception that I made to this rule is that I bought an Agile A2000 a couple months ago from GC.COM and had it shipped to me based off pictures. Once it got here, I was shocked at what I bought. Not a scratch anywhere on it and sounds like a dream. No regrets at all.
