Ok guys........

I stated in another thread that I'm out of the game when it comes to amps. So, with that said, lead me in the direction of a kick butt head to play metal/rock on. Any and all help will be appreciated.

It's been a long while since I got a new amp. It's time to rejoin the ranks. :D

Re: Ok guys........

Look into:

5150
XXX
JSX
Carvin V3
Mesa Mark IV
Dual or Single Recto (RTFM and have a salesguy who knows what hes doing help you set up either of the Mesa's. Print out a manual yourself and bring it in if you have to, but you have to take some time with these.)

What's your budget, past experience with amps and voicings you enjoy, power tube preference, etc? That will help us help you much easier.

Re: Ok guys........

amps are for gerls. Just pick really hard.

Re: Ok guys........

Well, the only thing I really know is that I want an all tube amp. lol As for budget...........really no restrictons, but I don't wanna spend an arm or leg if I don't have to.

Re: Ok guys........

a silverface fender twin modded for EL34's, and in-phase vibrato and normal channels for gain stage stacking!

Re: Ok guys........

What dealers do you have around you? This is what I'd be looking at:

500-999: 5150, XXX, JSX, used Single Rectifier, Carvin V3, Guitar Center is blowing out the Mesa Stiletto's for 850 right now.
1000-1499: New Single Recto, used VHT Pittbull CL's, ENGL Fireball/used Powerball, Mark IV, Dual Rectifier, newer Stiletto.
1499-2000: New Powerball, Diezel, Bogner, etc.

Re: Ok guys........

Thanks guys. I'll check into some of the amps you mentioned. I'm super excited about getting a new amp!!

Thanks for looking all that up, bro. Only problem is I know NOTHING about any of them. LOL What's the best in the 1000-1499 range?

I know, can you believe that? :eyecrazy:

Long is the way. And hard, that out of hell leads up to light

Re: Ok guys........

When you say "metal/rock", be more specific. Is there someones tone you would like to emulate? I would hate to point you in the wrong direction.

I'm not looking to emulate anyones sound in particular, but now that you mention it. I wouldnt mind getting the same kind of sound Arch Enemy has or somethign similar. I could definitely dig that. :33:

Re: Ok guys........

Arch Enemy tone...

Wages of Sin - ENGL Savage 120 and 5150 mixed.
Anthems of Rebellion - 5150 and XXX, one track of each on each side.
Doomsday Machine - Krank and Dual Racktifier, same as above.

All others were 5150's. The live tone is all 5150's, up until this past year.

But basically, when I think Arch Enemy, I think 5150, straight up. No studio magic, that's what the amp sounds like. Compare the tones of Kreator, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, Machine Head, Heartwork era Carcass, and God Forbid, and you'll find them all similar, because they all use 5150's. Nice, cutting midrange, and a smooth top end, with some grind thrown in for good measure.

Out of the 1000-1500 list... they're all different.

Rectifier - BIG, powerful, crushing, somewhat scooped tone. Think Nevermore, newer Testament, and newer Dream Theater here. Good cleans, as well.

VHT Pittbull - Dry, clean, precise, mid-present tone. Very dry, will not hide any mistakes. A very, very clean tone, and a nice lead tone. Might be a bit thin for more modern stuff, but an awesome amp. Clean tones are nothing to write home about.

ENGL - Saturated, juicy, thick, wet tone. Think Meshuggah here. The best example I've heard can be found at http://www.tesseractband.co.uk/sounds.php. Great representation of what the Powerball can do. Very good clean tones, too. The Fireball is a less frilly Powerball.

Mark IV - Think Black Album, Mark era Dream Theater, Lamb of God, etc. Tight as hell, crunchy as hell, present in the mids. Killer fluid lead tone, and that classic boogie crunch. Quite a versatile head, too. Santana and Skinlab both use them.

If you'd like, I can site some specific albums that get that tone accross well from different albums. (Ex: Testaments The Gathering was a Triple Rectifier into a 1960 cabinet)

Re: Ok guys........

See if you can find an old Sovtek head (or head and cabs) online . . . those things do distorted and loud really well . . . and they cna be had for a pretty good deal . . .
