Re: Ok guys........
Arch Enemy tone...
Wages of Sin - ENGL Savage 120 and 5150 mixed.
Anthems of Rebellion - 5150 and XXX, one track of each on each side.
Doomsday Machine - Krank and Dual Racktifier, same as above.
All others were 5150's. The live tone is all 5150's, up until this past year.
But basically, when I think Arch Enemy, I think 5150, straight up. No studio magic, that's what the amp sounds like. Compare the tones of Kreator, Arch Enemy, Soilwork, Machine Head, Heartwork era Carcass, and God Forbid, and you'll find them all similar, because they all use 5150's. Nice, cutting midrange, and a smooth top end, with some grind thrown in for good measure.
Out of the 1000-1500 list... they're all different.
Rectifier - BIG, powerful, crushing, somewhat scooped tone. Think Nevermore, newer Testament, and newer Dream Theater here. Good cleans, as well.
VHT Pittbull - Dry, clean, precise, mid-present tone. Very dry, will not hide any mistakes. A very, very clean tone, and a nice lead tone. Might be a bit thin for more modern stuff, but an awesome amp. Clean tones are nothing to write home about.
ENGL - Saturated, juicy, thick, wet tone. Think Meshuggah here. The best example I've heard can be found at
http://www.tesseractband.co.uk/sounds.php. Great representation of what the Powerball can do. Very good clean tones, too. The Fireball is a less frilly Powerball.
Mark IV - Think Black Album, Mark era Dream Theater, Lamb of God, etc. Tight as hell, crunchy as hell, present in the mids. Killer fluid lead tone, and that classic boogie crunch. Quite a versatile head, too. Santana and Skinlab both use them.
If you'd like, I can site some specific albums that get that tone accross well from different albums. (Ex: Testaments The Gathering was a Triple Rectifier into a 1960 cabinet)
