OK, so, Self contained PA's/Acoustic amps?

Re: OK, so, Self contained PA's/Acoustic amps?

But just like most other bose products....mannnn...the name alone seems to jack up the price about 200%

Yeah...In general I agree, but I have to say, that product hits a niche that nothing else really touches for the price. I was pretty skeptical, but after I had done a couple of freelance corporate gigs that involved them I came away pretty impressed compared to, say, the JBL Eons.

Sometimes ya got to pay the price to dance with the pretty girl...

If all you're going to run through it is an acoustic guitar and vocals, you might consider looking at a Fender Passport system. They make a P150 model that puts out 150 watts, looks like a suitcase when it's packed up and is one of the most transparent systems I've ever run through. We've been using ours HARD over the last 4 years and it's still going strong. Indoors, outdoors, it looks small, but it packs a helluva wallop. And...you can run it in stereo if you like.

To me, the Pasports are nice systems for PA or canned music, but when you are trying to sing AND have guitars in the mix the system just doesn't have enough EQ available to cope with different rooms and different instruments. You can run it in stereo, but they lack a proper monitor buss. They're fine for what they are, but...in my mind, they are a dead-end system with no modularity and no room for growth.

One of my local coffee houses has one. I get pretty frustrated with it cause I know I sound better with my XR-600C and the Peavey speakers I have.

Yeah...the passport systems never really rocked my boat. We used one back in my old high school for guitars and bass in jazz band...I never liked the thing that much. I remember it being really stinkin heavy, and not having enough punch.

Which, on the "not having enough punch" thing was great for the teacher, though, cause he didn't give a crap about the guitars and bass...only the horns.

That's interesting. I haven't found that to be the case, since if all you're running through it is guitar and voice, you don't really need a lot of EQ. I can't speak for the stereo end of it, because we never run it in stereo. In any case, it's been our primary system for the last 4 years and it seems to have no problems with any size area, including outdoors. Obviously outdoors it won't be tremendously loud, but then we're an acoustic duo and don't need to blow doors off.

Re: OK, so, Self contained PA's/Acoustic amps?

I had heard that this was a big problem with the AG100D, from MANY different users...seemed to be a pretty **** high fail rate on those. Somebody said that carvin fixed the problem about 3 years ago...but it's kept me from pulling the trigger on that one. Feature wise, it looks like exactly what I want on paper.

I've also heard a few reports of it being relatively quiet for a 100 watt amp, what's your take, Bill?

well, yeah, its nothing even close to a 100W tube amp - but we all know what that's about - no need to rehash it here ... it has been plenty loud for me as a stage monitor ... i send the line out to the PA when i need heavy lifting

like i said, if i had to do it over again, i'd go with a powered PA speaker like the eon or offerings from other rmfrs

as for the ag100d, yeah, when mine went up, i was bummed .. but was comforted to find on various BBs that others had the exact same problem and the fix ... after blasting it with contact cleaner, the problem has never come back ... carvin wanted too much $$ to fix (replace) it, so i am glad the cheap solution worked ...
