Okay, now I want a Dr Z

I got to try a used Route 66 yesterday. Like most of Z's creations, it's a single channel 3 knob head; no reverb, no effects loop, just a dead simple 32 watt amp.

I can't fully express how gorgeous the tone coming out of that thing was. Even with the volume way down it was fat and articulate. It managed to bring out the best in every guitar in the store I threw at it. The G&L Legacy was bright, punchy, and rang like a church bell. The Tokai R6 goldtop clone had the perfect P90 growl. The Tokai LP Custom clone sounded like a Les Paul should.

Not being content with a diet of clean and clean alone, I wanted to see how it would cope with some pedals. With a DS-1, it did the Marshall sound better than most Marshalls I've heard, especially at low volume. Big, beefy crunch with just enough low end to make power chords thump, but not enough to get into flabby territory. The BD-2 wasn't as impressive (the low end got too flabby with the gain up), but I consider that more of a failing of the pedal than the amp (I own a BD-2 and it did the same thing on my rig). With the gain down on the BD-2, I got a very nice blues lead tone on all three guitars.

Here's the amazing part: the whole time I was testing it, the Route 66 was running into one of those ultra-crappy Marshall Valvestate 4x12 cabs. A true testament to the amp that it sounded so lively and pure through such a horrendous cab! Next time I visit the store, I will try it through a proper cab - maybe a good 1x12 or 2x12.

In short: I haven't been this impressed by an amp in years. Too bad I can't buy it right now: $1,200 CAN is their asking price. Great deal!

Used at Not Just Another Music Shop, Granville St, Vancouver.

L&M carries them as well, supposedly, though I can't recall ever seeing one there.

Dr. Zs are AWESOME!!

I'm still formulating and impressive scheme to steal Luke's without him noticing.

I'm sure talking about it on here won't hurt my chances. :smack:

Re: Okay, now I want a Dr Z

I'll take any Z over any stinking Bad Cat or most Matchless for that sake!!
But I really want a Bruno:D

Hey, you reminded me: I bet a Plexitone would be excellent going into that Route 66! Have you tried this pairing?

Re: Okay, now I want a Dr Z

Only through one of the small heads, the Carmen Ghia through a 4x12 cab....wow what an amp!
I wanna try one of the Delta 88's!
The 66 uses KT-66's right??
Like our own amp then!

I'm a bit surprised, the last decent thing I've seen at NJAMS is the Jackson I traded in to get my JMP-1. :D

I should go check it out...

Re: Okay, now I want a Dr Z

I haven't gotten to check his amps as much as I wanted, but I think it takes guts nowadays to design amps with simple controls.

Dude, you should. Their amp stock right now is kick ass. They have a Mesa Mark IIb AND a IIc+!

Re: Okay, now I want a Dr Z

Curly, remember the Amp Show? Here was Dr. Z's corner, near GT, Orange, and Hiwatt.

I'll meet you there after work on Friday... I have to go to North Van to drop off my stereo for repair. I'll bring my EMG equipped Tele. We'll rock the joint... :D

^ Damn, GJ, not only do I have the Z GAS, but with that pic you've managed to re-kindle my Orange GAS!

An AD-30 and a Route 66 would be a PERFECT do-everything pair of medium wattage heads! I think I just designed my dream amp rig!

A Delta 88 and an OR80 would be more up my alley :firedevil

Re: Okay, now I want a Dr Z

I liked mine so much that I bought a Bad Cat!!!!

That wasn't meant to be rude. What happened is that I put my Maz 18 Jr. up for trade. I wanted the same amp but in head/cab version. When I did this the guy I bought it from saw it and asked if I would sell it back to him. He had regretted selling since it had lots of sentimental value to him. Since I am a nice guy I obliged and sold it back to him. It was really hard not to bite when the Badcat showed up for sale at the same price of the Z. I HAD to try it. I am glad I did because the Z was more Fenderish and the B/C is Voxier!!!
