Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

King Midas to Cheap Guitars
Picked up a cheap Jackson (Japanese I believe) knowing that it was refinished. When I got it, it seemed like enamel spray paint on top, and looking closely, they just taped everything off when they sprayed it. (Not everything. The pickups were spraypainted too!) A little bit of overspray on the back of the neck, etc. Gah. At least the pickups were USA models. I'll clean off the zebra Tone Zone and use that, and probably replace the covers on the two USA Fender single coils and sell those off.

Started pouring on the acetone, and found that there was purple with silver stripes under the black. Then black under that. Refinished twice! Grr! Then, the black started coming off. Well, I'll take it down to the wood.. wait! Metallic red under it. Refinished thrice! Then the red started coming up, found silver under that. Shoot, that's the base under the red. Then the silver started coming off, and there's metallic blue under that. I'm running out of acetone now. Son of a b_tch.

Bet it has a couple pounds of paint on it. :eek13:

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Quick update. Acetone started removing the metallic blue and there's black under that.

From top to bottom:

Black
Purple with silver stripes
Black
Metallic red
Silver
Metallic blue
Black

Lacquer thinner on a rag cleaned the Tone Zone right up with just a few swipes. At least there's that. I'll see if I can clean the two single coils the same way.

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

wow, that is just nuts. its like they just sanded the clear off and hit it with another color...then another...then another...be completely insane if you found about 3 more .

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

I'm just going to throw this out there for consideration: Work with what you have.

You couldn't create that if you tried. sand/strip parts/bits/areas down to various layers and you will have a very unique finish.

The top couple of layers are REALLY AWFUL. Spray a couple of layers of enamel with no prep or finish work and see if that's "unique". ;)

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

You should take core samples.

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

I'll let it sit for a day if anyone wants to give me $100 shipped for it as is. :D

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Let's get this striaght... Someone wanted his own "Old Boy", but didn't have spare SG :D

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

Maybe painting on top of that was easier for the former owner? Anyways good luck with that

Re: Okay, who the HELL did this refinish?

You got to wounder if it was all painted by one owner or multiple owners! WOW. You need to keep track of the number paint jobs, you might have new Guinness Book of World Records!

no kidding.. when I first opened pic, looks like it was dipped in tar.. guess it was someone that couldnt decide what color and just changed it every week.

Dom,
Do that poor axe a favor and once you strip it, leave it bare so it can breathe!
