AceMan is all over this.
Get an orbital sander and take that down to expose different layers of paint, all the way back to bare wood. It will take you 2 hours, tops, and it will be pretty awesome no matter what you find underneath.
You might need to take all of the tar layer off, though.

It's the top few layers that are giving me all the trouble, chemicals work best for them. I'd just be gumming up any sanding pads if I tried sanding it. Once I get it down to the stock finish, I'll see if there's any damage on that before I go further.
I might go with the heavy strippers today rather than the slow and steady acetone.

Dude that's amazing and hillarious!!! Finally though the guitar is in good hands. You will make this thing look so good, and there's an epic horror story of years of paint torture....

That one works okay, but I pull out the aircraft remover these days. You know that stuff works because it starts burning on contact.

Got my arm with the spindle sander the other day with a 60 grit sleeve installed. Not fun.

I'll admit that I was tempted to get a wire wheel for my polisher and have at it, but then I realized that I'd just have all that paint glop all over the place.. and I'm renting here.
