Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

ImmortalSix

John Mayer's Mankini
I have an old Peavey "Classic" amp with two 6L6GC's (that's all) and two 12" speakers. It sounds like crap, something's broken, trying to figure out what. It sounds like I'm playing through a telephone or an old timey radio. Lots of distortion, compression, etc. Does it just need new tubes?

Thanks, tube honchos!

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

Tap the tubes with a pencil or something mate (with the cover's off and the amp on) If they make a hell of a noise then yup you need new 'uns

If that's not the problem then maybe the speaker connection??? :usa1:

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

Perhaps it's time to get that thing to a tech for new caps and tubes. If I'm not mistaken, that thing might be up to 30 years old.

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

Probably still better than those "transtube" models they made though!:smack:

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

IIRC, the Classic 212's use 4 6L6's, so check to see if there are four sockets. Also, is it just the Classic, or is it a Classic VTX? I know on the VTX, there's this crazy phaser/flanger effect when you pull one of the knobs, check to see if the knobs are push/pull, and that they're all in, for normal operation. Lynyrd Skynyrd uses 'em, don't they?

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

It has just TWO 6L6GC's. I'll go turn it on :fingersx: :laugh2: and try tapping on the t00bs.

btw,

I'm not a "take it to a professional" kind of guy :fing25:

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

Are those the old ones that had a solid state pre-amp with tube power amp?

I had one YEARS ago (around 1980). It had two channels, reverb and a built-in phaser. You could select the channels independently or cascade one into the other. It had some pretty good sounds. I think I only sold it because it wasn't LOUD enough for my needs at the time.

Another rambling reminiscence from Simon_F. :reporter:

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

Black tolex, faux metal knobs, script logo, phaser---SS preamp, 2x6L6...I had one when I was playing in a country band and the SS IC would go every onct in a while, among other things. I didn't try to fix it then and I wouldn't recommend it now...take it to a tech and get it done right.

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

I fired it up - I tapped on the tubes and they're not noisy :idunno:

Yes, I *think* it is one of the old ones with a solid state preamp and 6L6 power since it only has those 2 6L6GC tubes

I can't get it to sound very sweet distorting, but the clean is KUH-LEAN and loud

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

also, no script logo, regular Angular Peavey

It also has an accutronics spring reverb in it I just saw, that does not work.

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

I believe Skynyrd used the Peavey Mace series. Another really cool amp with clean tones to die for.

Re: Old Peavey Classic 2x12...

What color are they glowing? Or colors if that's the case.

Not a "take it to a professional kind of guy"? Smart. I'd hate to break down and go as far to admit that "I don't know how to fix it". Pride is a great tool for collateral damage.

Yellow-Orange.

And yes, I know all about pride and collateral damage. Below is a picture of the Jeep as I sold it for 1/16th of what I had in it 16 months after I swapped a new engine into it. :chairfall Notice it's leaving on a trailer :laugh2:
