On the fence whether I should get a programmable loop

Okay, I have 6 pedals, a tuner and a DI/Cab Sim. I've been gassing for a loop for a while now. Truthfully, I don't really need it. It's probably more versatile this way and it's lighter, which is great since I use public transportation to get to gigs.

You think I should go ahead and pull the trigger, or should I save my money and spend it on something more useful?

They're a really handy tool, so I don't see why not. They have the benefit of reducing the amount of cable your guitar signal travels through on the way to the amp (any pedal not in use just doesn't exist as far as the loop is concerned), they mean that if a pedal ever breaks during a gig you can just turn it off without having to rewire your entire board in the moment, a programmable one can give you some interesting switching options for changing overdrive pedals or making presets for certain songs, and of course my favourite advantage is that they allow you to control everything with your feet without worrying about accidentally kicking any knobs or ruining any settings.

There's a lot of advantage to having one. As for 'save your money for something more useful' it depends.. if you are currently GASing for a certain pedal or piece of gear that will directly affect your tone, then maybe go for that first. It's kind of like buying a high quality power supply.. it's sort of a boring piece of gear and won't really 'help' your sound, but it definitely affects the usability of your rig.

I suppose it would be practical if you are happy with the effects you have and just want an expanded and efficient way in which to control them.

I've been looking into the same thing recently. I don't have all that many pedals, but it would be a lot easier to go from a clean tone with chorus and reverb, to a dirty sound with delay and a boost with only one switch to hit. It also helps if the loop has the option to switch channels on your amp.

What companies have you looked into? I've been looking at Americanloopers.

I don't have that many pedals, but the tap dancing is hurting me. I don't lug my amp to gigs anyway, so it doesn't matter.
