Re: Once upon a tone
I like that, Jeff. Do you do all your recordings with that lttle Vox AD15VT? So many of those clips sound huge.
Some are the Da5 (miniamp...all digital, no tube). I think all my clips specify on the page.
I've read the specs for that series on the web, and aside from outputs for speaker cabs, an FX loop on the 100, and obvious output wattage, are the valvtronix amps the same? In other words, should one expect the exact same performance from the 15 and the 30 when using the line out? Those 15s are priced just right, too. I also wish I could find that kind of warmth in the tube amp models on the Line 6 Guitar Port.
the Da5/15, AVT15/30/50 and 100 all use the same front end. the 60/120 are the more bells and whistles models..they have built in stompers, more models, etc.
When using the line out..yes, they all are the same basically (the Da5 only has a "tone" control,a master volume and a gain..all the rest have bass/mid, treble, gain, vol, master). I've owned the 15/30/50 and IMO the 15/50 sound better than the 30 bone stock with no speaker swap...the 30 is a little flubbier and less "full" sounding. the 30 and up have the variable wattage control...which is a really nice feature..but also makes it a little more difficult to fine tune in..the VT tube can get really farty sounding if you push it too hard, and you've got to find the "sweet spot".
Also note than when using the line out the tube is NOT in the circuit.
I just record using my laptops built in mic...and put the lappy in front of the amp. The DA5 actually records and sounds best that way...and prolly are the clips that you think sound "huge", cos it does sound bigger..I believe because I can get the laptop right up to the amps speaker and at the same level...just projects better into the mic, I guess...?
IMO the DA5 (all digital) sounds better..in that the voicings are more accurate, it's more responsive and doesn't have any tube "sag"..i.e. faster attack.........but it lacks the warmth the tube has and can get shrill at higher volumes. If they could get the voicings with the tube models as good, and have the same kind of faster attack.....oh boy:banana:
