One amp only. Count em: ONE. See rules. This means you too Daemon's BBQ.

curious about choice overlap between chicken-pickers, jazz-cats, blues-dudes, rock-punks, metal-heads, zydeco-...uh...-people. For purposes of highly concentrated education about amps, hundreds of which we've maybe never played before.

I don't care if you own it, played it in the store for 10 minutes, read about it, heard about it from a friend, or it is the stuff of myth and legend. Never mind about speaker cabs, unless of course your choice is a combo.

if you play stadiums AND studios and you MUST have more than one amp, I guess you can have more than one choice, but only one for each application.

The rules:

1. You have to say why:
a. application (stadium, club, band rehearsal, recording studio, bedroom/practice).
b. tone (please decribe).
c. other (features, tube preference, ease of having it serviced, color of power light, etc.).

2. Price / budget is NOT a factor:
a. You can have anything you want.
b. Yer welcome.
c. I will ship it to you shortly.
d. No, not really.

3. Forbidden, not allowed, no-no, or a hex on yer tone:
a. As a backup, I would choose....No.
b. I was going to say yadda, but....Nuh-uh.
c. My second choice is....Nyet.
d. Mike, why are you being such a picky bas-....But, no.

4. Styles and choices change with our growth, evolution. Pick one for where yer at now.
a. Not a factor this time, but at first I wanted this thread to cover that.
b. So, it's not one amp for life.
c. It's not one amp for the rest of yer musical career.
d. *** But, yer daydream amp could be able to cover any style as you grow/change. This would be a great choice (if possible) for the thread.

I am still thinking about my choice. One is from a land far away, and thus may be hard to have serviced, if and when. I've never played one of these. Another choice I have played, and yet another I owned for 10 years.

Re: One amp only

I'd take one of those Randall MTS rack preamp/poweramps with some custom modules based on/cloned from the following:

5150
2ch Dual Recto
ENGL Savage
Splawn Pro-Mod
Fender Blackface

clever. let's ya pick more than one!
I tried the XTC, Mr. Scary, and the Blackface, but didn't crank 'em, cuz ya can't in that particular store. Have to admit that's an intriguing idea, easier to cover the most bases

Re: One amp only

Hard one...
If i Can have 2 amps
Diezel VH4 and Herbert...
Both extreme good Valve amps with Midi control.
Both have multiple valve combinations...
Both are Hi-End ,extreme good and sturdy amps.

But i could do a Mark IV - Soldano Avenger combo too.Perfect for everything!

Re: One amp only

Super Reverb

Super Reverb - for studio
*TWO* Super Reverbs - for stage

Dude!!! You picked what, 3, 4 amps? You broke the rules. :banghead:

You now have to contribute to every one of my threads scattered throughout the forum as punishment.:14:

You of all people....You WERE my favorite. :chairshot

Re: One amp only

I will follow the rules: My one amp.

I'm quite happy (today) with my Splawn Quickrod. I have learned to play with less gain and gotten more tone in return. I have seen the light! Stadium or club, more versital than you'd guess.....It's the Marshall tone you've always wanted. A Marshall on steriods.....

Bingo right there.
I'd pick the JVM, Brown, XTC, and 1086. And you can mode the crap out of them too!

Re: One amp only

One amp? Well, it'd be a two channel non-switching amp, run on EL34 power tubes, and have two different preamp sections. One a 12AX7 section, based on the classic Marshall/Fender tonestack, the other one EF86 for a Vox-type tone.

Clean on the 12AX7 should be somewhere between a Tweed Fender Bassman and a Marshall Plexi. Clean on the EF86 channel should have that classic Vox chime.

Pushed into distortion, the 12AX7 channel can go from Cream/Free to AC/DC to Thin Lizzy gain levels. I would have a Kasha Quickmod attached the V1 of the 12AX7 channel to push the amp into 80s metal territory (thanks for the idea in the LA Amps thread Gearjoneser!). The EF86 channel, pushed into distortion should be able to recall the classic driven Vox tones, and with something like a Rangemaster clone and the proper guitar, recall a tone similar to Brian May's or Rory Gallagher's with those amps.

It would also have some kind of Fender Spring Reverb unit built in. Preferably as a 100 watt head with switchable 50/25 watt power reduction. Now, where I would find something like this, I might never know.

Re: One amp only

Sorry, no can do. More than one gig, plus gig sizes vary from tiny to big and more than one style to cover.

I prefer to have 4 amps. Some get used in tandem, but mostly it's picking the right amp for the right gig or track:

-One to cover the tweed 6V6 tone. For this I have Victoria Double Deluxe.

-One to cover the Vox AC30 tone. Right now, I have a Mesa Blue Angel, but I'd happily change that up to a 65 london or marquee. The advantage there is those amps also do a nice plexi emulation at usable volumes.

-One to do the slightly higher wattage 6l6 post-tweed/pre-blackface fender clean and light drive tone. Used to use a Fender custom vibrolux for this. Right now there's a hole in the collection there. I could probably happily plug it with a Headstrong verbovibe.

-And finally, an amp with the early Brit tone. Think JTM45. Right now I have a clone, but I would like some kind of handmade bluesbreaker type amp. Perhaps a Germino.

hahaha.Dude you asked if we use one for the studio and one for the gigs.I chose them...

okay...
so i give one more shot!

I choose the Diezel VH4!
So what did i won now?ahahahah:friday::naughty:

Re: One amp only

Bogner XTC, it could do just about anything I would ever need.

Ever.

I play everything from Jazz to Shred to death metal. I do play jazz in clubs, but then, even small, low wattage amps are generally too loud and are frowned upon turning up, so the headroom shouldn't be a problem to get good warm clean tones at that volume.

Re: One amp only

I would want a custom made Bogner Ecstasy in 60W with 2 E-34L's. It'd have a half power switch for 30W. I like my amp, but it's a real volume monster. I'd like to have all the same features, but less wattage.

Re: One amp only

I'd have the Randall MTS rack system with a modded blackface channel, a Plexi channel, a custom rhythm module and a custom lead module.
