It's a new record... one hour, and I'm sold It's almost scary how much Dime is in this thing- the lows are chunky, the highs have a ton of trebley cut, just the right amount of sludge to thicken it all up, and an underlying twang that keeps everything really clear. Harmonics are the best yet, and the clean tone doesn't suck, either!

I'm really digging this thing. Now I just gotta get a '59 neck to go with it...

In my experience the Invader was really abrasive, but in a good way. The Dime is agressive too, but it has this squishy, slimy quality about it that I like better than the Invader.

Very well said. It kind of seems like everything I like about the JB, Invader and Distortion all wrapped up, with some Tele-tone tossed in as well.

I forgot to mention I'm using it in a basswood/rosewood/maple/floyd guitar, 11-54 strings tuned drop D, a whole step down.

your making me almost regret not getting one...i was looking for a new bridge PU for my schecter XXX and scored a great deal on a JBJ on ebay so i went with that over the dime...i think i may try the dime down the road though.

I'd like to get an XL-500. Did you know that Dime flipped his BL pickups around so "the hot coil was towards the neck"?

The Dime is great! I've been using them since they first hit the market.

They have this warm, corpulent tone to them, really thick with the right amount of gain; but not too much gain. It holds together really well with a lot of distortion and just keeps consolidated when your amp is cranked to '11.'

The dynamics are insane; you can hear all of your picking techniques cut through with clarity.
The Dime is also not what a lot of people think it is. It does not have a crazy amount of dostortion, nor will it make your sound go retarded and start breaking up.

I think it's one of the best pickups to help you shape your own tone just because it has such a consistant tone and really lets you hear what your guitar sounds like, rather than mask the tone like some pickups.


You should try it with a SH-10 in the neck, it's totally killer--and it's currently what I use in all of my guitars.

No kiddin? You should get a XL-500. I know that and the Dimebucker are similar designs but, I am curious to hear how different they are. I think you will like one alot. I need to get my hands on a dimebucker.

I just got this pickup a few days ago and I can't put the guitar down. I have the 59 in the neck and it contrasts so well. For the record, I'm not a Dime fan and it is just a coincidence that I have his pickup combo. The dimebucker does rule. The best pickup Duncan makes.

Not to derail the thread, but do you guys think Duncan should offer a new pickup as a tribute to Dime's memory, called the Hails Rails Dime Neck, basically the Dimebucker neck? Since Dime obviously never used the pickup, it could be created as a "toast to Dime" tribute model? It's an idea I'm approaching Duncan with. I've always thought that model needs a matching neck position.

I have yet to play the dimebucker but, I use a set of BL's also. What kind of differences do the XL and the Dimebucker have.

From what I understand, the Dime would actually be closer to the XXL-500, Dime's custom BL model. He was always pretty straight forward about his gear in interviews, and I'm under the impression that the only reason he quit using BL is they were too hard to find, and he needed a steady source of new ones.

Bill was making pickups through out Dimes entire career. I don't see how they would be hard find? I think it was all about $$$$$ It's no big secret that Dime didn't get his endorsements from Duncan, until the making of Reinventing the Steel even then, Pantera was on the brinks. I don't even think there was anything recorded with them until Damageplan and even then he said used the Dean from Hell on alot that album also.

Go grab the book Riffer Madness. It gives alot of interesting details about his setup.

That's an excerpt from his interview on the Duncan site. I'm aware that it is a Duncan interview, and could appear biased, but I never really heard him say anything to contradict himself before, so...

They never went out of production. The Partnership of the original company split in 84, but both men continued to make pickups. Bill was making his pickups in Germany for awhile (OBLs). The other continued to make the not so good versions here n the states. Either way, I'm sure he didn't sit near his computer on forums all day like us that know where to go to get these things!

Did they even have internet back then? How would I survive?

A while back I found an Ebay auction for a Dimebucker, and a Custom Shop Dimebucker neck...MJ has done one before.

That's not completely the truth....Alot of the high end Washburn Sig models (333s and up) came with the not so good 500XLs as did alot of Nuno Sigs....It was rumored that the top dollar custom shop Dimes came with the "real" 500s but wasn't in standard production guitars because Bill couldn't keep up with Washburns demand.

IMO it was about the allmighty dollar. And there's nothing wrong with that. Bill Lawrence says on his website that he has NO paid endorsers and pickups speak for themselves.

There's nothing wrong with getting a pickup made the way you want it, with your name on it and on top of that, get paid to use it!
