People will pay for the name...that being said, I honestly don't know how much longer they can run the way they are running. Maybe Gibson will fall out of the public eye (they've already alienated the "well informed internet gear nerd crowd")...

We represent a VERY small piece of the market. There are people out there that will never so much as touch anything but a Gibson because of the name. Because of that, they won't know if a better guitar exists, they will continue to think that the lemon on the GC wall is the best playing guitar ever. They just don't know any better, and never will. THOSE are the people that keep Gibson going in the price bracket they're in.

I think building one in your shop as a one-man operation, and having the equipment to churn them out on a large scale via CNC is pretty different though. Not to mention buying wood and other materials in bulk the way a company like Gibson does.

HOW MANY NON GUITAR PLAYERS OWN GIBSON!?!!??

I know so many people who just own gibsons because they're rich and they want to have one on a stand in the house, or a few of them. A buddy of mine who plays sax has a vintage selmer tenor sax, a pimped out 90's american jazz bass, and a 335....he can't play any of them worth his own weight in feces......Gibson has found their clientele and as long as these fools throw down money without skills, those with skills and no money won't play gibson....

Gibson has always been inconsistent with their guitars. No two guitars had the same measurements before CNC. They always put lighter mahogany in the high end standards and customs and the heavy stuff in the studios and juniors. Their PAF pickups varied in quality materials and sound. Today, the specs and build are much tighter in quality, but a great sounding guitar is more than the some of its parts. Some of their best made guitars look and feel great, but sound like ****. This is where they fail. Paul Reed Smith personally inspects all of the guitars before they leave the factory and smashes any that fail and hangs the broken guitar at the desk of the employee who botched it. I wish Gibson and Fender had that kind of integrity.

not dumb, never said dumb! They just like to own fancy instruments with a reputation like Gibson. I'm just surprised at how many 'non players' own Gibson just because they can. It's messed up, but they can do whatever they want. They can go ahead and support that company.

Gibson MUST make a decent portion of their income off 'non players' who opt to own for 'prestige' because I personally know quite a few cases. If I'm way out of line, so be it. There's players of all walks of life that play Gibson, but I have met many of these 'Doctor/collector' types that spend more on gear in a few months than I would spend a lifetime, and Gibson is #1 on that expenditure list. It just shows how much of a household name Gibson has become.

I salute the 339/336 to no end. The best idea for a guitar in years, and Gibson does deliver on it. BUT HOW BOUT THESE RICH DOCTOR AND LAWYER FOLK DONATIN' THEIR EXCESS GIBBYS TO THE FORUM!!!!!?

You guys are right...they should change their slogan to:
"In 1959 we produced the best guitars in history, we've kinda dropped the ball over the years, but that doesn't mean we can't ride the coattails of our former glory and put out stupid, overpriced crap!"

You know - I had two very interesting discussions about this with some very heavy duty music industry people. They seem kind of baffled too.

But as a consultant, I agree. This business model comes to an end. The first sign will be "returning to our roots" with way less product line. Then, "We are really moving to a more select segment of the market"

There are tons of companies that do exactly that for less than 1/3 the price and generally more or at least equal quality.

When the time comes, I'll be fully prepared to play a ton of them so I don't run into lemons that weren't QC'd well. Just wanted to put that out there.

I own a Studio and if you shop diligently you may find one that, if you get it set up properly (and I mean you will have to do everything from neck adjust to fret leveling and nut filing) you might end up with a good player. As far as finish goes don't even bother to look for a good one because there aren't any. You will not find a single one that doesn't have lacquer sucked into the grain from lack of proper fill coat and orange peel dimples everywhere. If you must have the damn thing at least go for the faded model since the matte finish hides the flaws that they all have.
