opinions on custom guitar shape...

I'm planning on making a guitar over the next year or so, depending when money comes in.

Been thinking about shapes and drew this thing.

Basically an sg/explorer hybrid but in reverse.
This look cool to you or ugly as sin? Anything you would do to it to change it?

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

Looks a bit rough on a sketch pad. I'd like to see it in more detail on a computer maybe with the body contour lines. My first impression is you have a symmetrical top with the two horns and an asymmetrical bottom (explorer) shape.

SG horns and "pointy guitars" should not be mixed ever.

God alone knows why gibson AND dean did it. They both look revolting, but then both companies have a history of making some amazing looking guitars and a bunch of putrid wastes of wood as well.

I realize i'm not offering up anything constructive here and I do apologize for that, but IMO, mashing together two existing body shapes that look good on their own doesn't mean that the resulting collision is going to be pretty as well.

the whole reason that many of the classic designs look good is because every little part plays off the other parts of the design, so it all comes together cohesively, and there's no eyesores.....which is quite a different design philosophy from jamming two things together and hoping for the best.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

I'm not feelin' it, tell the truth. Reminds me of the SGV thing Zakk Wylde has. How about offset SG horns like an ESP Viper?

Actually the Viper is most of the way there were the big offset on the tail of the body too. (shrug) The symmetrical horns vs the very asymmetrical tail just feel odd.

BUT HEY...since when am I you? Do what you like! I want to build something similar to a Punisher bass, only for guitar and completely symmetrical with the electronics in back of the bridge.

The second I drew it I thought it would look and probably balance better with the viper horns.

Weirdo thing is I started drawing it as an original shape but it evolved into this. The only reason I put it up here is because I thought it looked cool already and wanted second opinions. Besides it's not NEARLY as revolting as the tele v......

I'm not rich or talented enough to make a 3d rendering!

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

No. The geometry doesn't flow, it's not consistent with itself. It's hard to explain what that means, but it's why LPs strats and Teles are timeless, and why you don't see pointy and round guitar shapes mixed together often, if ever.

Explorer is pointy, half of an sg is pointy. I guess I don't get it.

So far I guess it's 0-3

ABOMINATION!!!!! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

in all honesty though, try making that lower bout of the explorer part a bit less pronounced, and maybe making the corners of the SG part a bit more angular rather than smooth curves. also yeah, agreed on the offset horns thing that the Viper does. That might pull it together a bit. might end up looking like a pointier version of a Viper, which would be interesting....

explorers, Vs, stars, MLs - they're pointy and angular.

SGs have only two points, but other than that, they are totally curvy - no hard angles anywhere.

The Tele-V at least has enough wood on it that you could cut off the V part and have yourself a nice guitar.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

Well thanks for that man,
But the bottom left side is not angular like the explorer is and the waist of it is too thick in that rendering.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

What if you did a SG/Jazzmaster - that SG explorer doesn't work IMO because there's a huge contrast between curvy and pointy. If you softened the blow of that lower bout of the explorer some like in the jazzmaster shape, I think it could be a little more cohesive.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

It's not as simple as 'has points' 'doesn't have points', there's symmetry, proportions, theme, follow-through, bla bla bla. I'm sure there are people who made more of a science out of it, like graphic designers, but since it deals with aesthetic appeal, it will never be 100% science, not in our lifetime. Long story short, OPs design lacks balance.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

I dunno guys, I've seen far worse hybrids of two classic designs. Case in point, the Telebomination above.
