opinions on custom guitar shape...

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

Think of it in reverse too. Long horn on the bottom. I'm liking it a little more that way. I like the reverse body guitars mostly.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

Looking at OPs sketch again, I see a dress (or possibly a tunic) which follows the common theme of guitars being shaped like women. It could work, but the angles and edges, which are currently blurs of lines, could make or break it.

Considering I was going for a Halbird like design with a thick stabbing and slashing blade with underhooks for gouging and disarming... I'm going to consider that a low blow.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

I like it. The extra wood might alleviate the neck dive. You need to do something creative with all that extra real estate. Add a tv monitor, steering wheel, ballet rail, you know, something practical.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

Fugly, Gibson keeps making abominations like this very often. I find them Fugly.

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

I know what I'm gonna say might sound dour and negative, but i don't mean it to sound that way ....

If you're thinking about a custom guitar but can't decide on a body shape without enlisting the thoughts of others, you may not be ready to build a custom guitar. It would also be helpful to decide whether you're making something to be impressive at the current time, or something that will still make you proud to be seen with it in, maybe, 15 or 20 years' time.

Because really, the rest of a custom guitar is most likely going to be pretty typical ... neck, bridge, hadware etc ... even most pickup/ electronic configurations have been done ... so unless a designer has come up with some radical new electronics or hardware, the body is probably the single biggest area in which to make their design statement.

Personally, I think you need to have your body shape nailed before thinking about building, and you should be so confident about it that it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Designing by committee or following current trends could lead to being the most talked-about kid on the block for a few weeks, but ending up with something you're ashamed to be seen with in a few years' time.

Plan carefully, and at length. 95% of the outcome will originate from the planning.

Yoy assume I posted this here for validation. I did not. It is being made anyway, because I personally like the shape. Just like sharing my ideas.

Then obviously i misinterpreted the last line of the opening post, "Anything you would do to it to change it ?", which seems to have been the trigger for many or most of the contributions from others.

But of couse, i'm old and know nothing and anything i have to say is best ignored. (seriously).

Re: opinions on custom guitar shape...

Let me explain. I am helping build the guitar, but the guitar is not for me. It is for my buddy Donkus, who looks kind of like Hagrid but with a more blond hair color. REALLY into space rock and prog. He is the one who actually decided on this shape, and he loved it. I thought I would toss the idea out here to see if I am overlooking something. I accounted for the weight and balance of the thing both on strap and on the knee, the feel of the upper fret register, the strap button placement, where the strumming arm would rest etc. It seemed fully functional but I wasn't sure, maybe I was missing something. Offset upper horn was a good idea, maybe contour the body different rereverse the shape, all good ideas but not things that would change the core aesthetic. Functionally it seemed airtight to me, but nothing and nobody is above peer review. How cool the thing looks is totally subjective, wanted some good conversation though.
Besides with the popularity of guitars like the:
Dean Cadillac
Washburn/dean Dime shape
ZW SGV
Schecter's tele/les paul shape (that I personally hate)
And more, this isn't that farfetched. Frankly I think it would be the best looking of all of them.

Also the Strat was designed by committee of a bunch of different musicians and Leo himself.

When I was talking about validation, I mean't the looks. When it comes to function it is a different story. Maybe there are red flags I don't know about that I should watch out for? I mean this not to ignore or disrespect your post, but to shed light on what is going on. I would've put this in the OP but it would've been too long and taken too much effort which I have used here anyway.

All right.
Go ahead.

Sorry I missed that part, but I think the problem is the lines in the sketch leave the silhouette (or any other aspect about it) open to interpretation. It's hard to tell how round or straight or pointy it is, and the smallest little detail can make all the difference.
