Opinions on inlays

I'm specing out a custom locally made Les Paul-ish guitar, aka the CMG Ashlee. They are some of the nicest guitars I have ever had the pleasure of playing outside of guitars 3 times the price. I will already be getting a custom so I can add a Volume pot and a black headstock face.

The basic production model of this these guys make has no fret marker inlays. I have played several of these in stores so far, and it's not a problem for my playing as it has side dots.

I know its ultimately up to me, but I was just wondering what your opinions where. What looks better to you, inlays or no inlays?

I go back and forth on inlays, I love a black Ebony board without inlays and think Maple looks good with only black dots. I love the look of Sharkfin inlays in Rosewood...just my random thoughts.

Have you considered specialized inlays such as these that Petros Guitars offers?


EDIT: Btw, congrats on getting the incoming NGD :D

Inlays, and big ones! On a dark stage it's infinitely easier to see where your fingers are supposed to go when you have big inlays.

I have an LTD Deluxe that is Abalone overload.. I honestly don't care for it but the guitar plays awesome so I deal with it.. It am more along the lines of Standard LP block inlays.
If you're going with a Custom then go all out but for a Standard normal inlays are fine..

Thanks man, I wouldn't want to call it out just yet as an incoming NGD yet though.

I'm probably going to have to wait for that Christmas and birthday Dough to make it happen. Expect a threat around the new year though :).

I always liked the clean look of Chris Broderick's Ibanez though

See I'm not thrilled by extravagant inlays, I'm a plain old blocks or traps and such kinda guy

That's one of the reasons I dislike the Ibanez JEM.

I like fairly subtle inlays. PRS dragon looks cool but more in an art sense than a i want to play this sense, if that makes sense, lol.

Abalone on a Les Paul doesn't sit well with me. It's just too colorful.

Peraloid blocks though are cool

PRS dragon looks like a great Wall hanger, but I couldn't see myself playing one either.

What If it's only kinda a Les Paul? [emoji14]

It's single cut with maple, mahogany, and rosewood all in the right places, but it's going to have VVT controls, switch down low, no pickguard (might try one though), no binding, and a belly cut.

Very LP in my book, but not everyone's idea of a paul.

Haha, I sense you have a bit more purist in you than I do.

I do love normal Les Pauls, and I will probably have a small collection of them one day.

All of the used and new CMG I have come across have all been superb guitars. In my opinion better than an average Gibson in the price range ($800 stock). I have found 3 CMGs that speak to me, while the LP studios I have tried just didn't click.

They are different guitars than the Gibson LPs, nothing wrong with that. They do have huge similarities as the Ashlee is based on the LP.

It's kinda like the Ibanez ARZ models, new takes on the LP, except this one is 24.75 and 22 fret.

Oops, sorry didn't get the tone well when I was it reading fast.

Yea, that would look nice. Maybe just one lighter wood inlay at the 12th fret

Edit: just looked up a bit on the celtic cross. I didn't know it was such a controversy over the meaning. I might stick with something more nonreligious.

I've got a Schecter like that, gaudy but the guitar is a good one.

I like the inlay-free look on Charvel style guitars, but I prefer the LP Standard trapezoid or Custom blocks on a Gibson style.

Never heard of CMG before, but the Ashlee looks nice. I mostly like the changes they've made over a LP.

Only one thing...why did they give it a trailer park stripper name?

I'm kidding but Yea, it's his wife's name. All of the models he has done are named after friends and family and such
