Opinions on metal tone

Re: Opinions on metal tone

Personally I think it sounds alright, but needs more... shape (?) in the mids. They're very up-front and like VK said a little scratchy. Not necessarily bad of course but I'd like more flavour.

I don't think you need any more gain but after you tweak the EQ a bit more that could change. I also feel like VK/PM have the right idea... the former's always had great tones in his stuff so I trust his opinion. You've got the right idea about the Presence, Bright and Treble. Find the right combination without too much of any of them and the tone will get smoother.

You're on your way to a great metal tone in context though! Keep experimenting.

Thanks!

I had 15 minutes, so I wanted to give it a go to see how it turned out. Got this: http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=653154&songID=9051612 (pardon for the timing issue, especially at the end :laugh2:)

After a few spins on my stereo, I think this one got a little too dark and slightly boomy. Perhaps something between the first and this one..

Re: Opinions on metal tone

While I'm here, you got a bass guitar?
A guitar tone ain't a guitar tone without one.
Once your ears really start to adjust to the modern metal sound, you will seriously understand the role of the bass guitar in being a huge factor in the guitar sound.
A lot of people claim they "can't hear" the bass in metal because a lot of the time it might just be following the guitar riffs, but compare a mix with no bass guitar and then put bass guitar in and it makes a huge difference.
Playing bass tightly with the guitar tracks is also super essential to that big sound. If you can't play worth a ****, at the least learn good editing skills :laugh2:

yes!!! bassists rule teh earthz!!!

Re: Opinions on metal tone

listening to the first one, i thought 'hey, this would be cool for more of a rock/hard rock type sound with just a bit less gain.'

the second one, if you take away just i >< tiny bit of bass out and ad a bit more treble for bite, i think would be a much better metal tone. overall i like it:)

All new for me, except The Way of All Flesh, which indeed is very good. Gonna listen a little for those others.

I can see that, and I do have a bass. It's a four stringer, though, I think I should have a fiver for what I've got here. I could do something else where the four would fall into place, though.

I agree!

+1 on all counts. I think if you take this suggestion it should place you right in the happy medium between the two tones.

Also I'm surprised you've never listened to Gojira before. The last part of your riff around :30 reminds me of them... a lot actually (check out the song "To Sirius").

Yeah, that would prolly do it. At least for the time being. :)

And I've listened a lot to Gojira (one of my favorite metal acts - check my avatar ;)), and you're right on the money. The ending of the riff was really just to round it all off, and the harmonics are a blueprint of what Joe often does, except that I combined two ways of getting those harmonics.
