I have a Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus and would like to change the pick ups,I was thinking of the Pearly Gates for the Neck and a 59 for the bridge.
I play mostly Blues and Blues rock.
Any opinions or suggestions would be appriciated.:friday:

What sort of sound were you going for? If it was me I would actually swap your idea around and run the PG in the bridge and the 59 in the neck or even running the PG in both slots would be good.

What amp etc are you using with it?

PG neck. Brobucker bridge. If the latter seems too expensive, try a Custom.

Re: Opinions Wanted:P/U's for Epiphone Les Paul

In my Epi Les Paul I tried a Custom 5 in the bridge and a Pearly Gates in the neck.

I HATED the C5, it was far too scooped (the same reason I hated the 59s in my Gibby LP) so I changed it for a Screamin' Demon. I loved the combo of the Demon and PG as it covered alot of ground and didn't sound out of place in any context.

That combo wasn't a good choice to start with. A ten bucks mag swap with an UOA5 would've turned that Custom 5 into a lean, mean rock machine.

Sorry you didn't try that '59 set with A4 mags. I'm quite sure you wouldn't've replaced'em in the first place.

Anyway, good you liked the Screamin' Demon. That's one of very few Duncan p'ups I haven't yet had the opportunity to try.

HTH,

I have a Vox Valvetronix VT30 and a Fender Blues Jr and am sort of looking for a Jimmy Page sound

Re: Opinions Wanted:P/U's for Epiphone Les Paul

Well, the 59 is the pickup of choice in these parts for a Jimmy Page sound for bridge and neck. Will you be doing the Page wiring system as well?

However - can't argue with the PG neck option! I have one in a Epi Classic and it sounds fantastic.

PG/59 is a fantastic all around combo and should work just fine for what you want to do - and the Vox/fender will agree with them too.

I say go for it, unless you are really a Page purist, in which case two 59's would be recommended. I prefer the PG/59 set though.

TripleShot for both the neck and bridge

Wired to a matched set of '59 bridge and '59 neck.

While the PG have nice sustain, it really is too bridge (Brittle) for blues using the Epi Les Paul and amps that you have.

I have considered the 59/59 combo and will probably do the Jimmy Page wiring system,I just really liked the sound of the PG's.
I'm semi retired and have time to do the things I want should have done this years ago,I'm finding this forum to be a great resource
Thanks Guys

Re: Opinions Wanted:P/U's for Epiphone Les Paul

The PG is your best choice for the neck.

The '59 is a bit too bright (trebly) for the bridge without some mag swapping, IMO.

I agree wholeheartedly with the suggestion for the Demon in the bridge. Great pup...good lows, rich mids, sparkly highs, a little warmer and softer highs than the '59, but still PAF sounding. Goes very well with the PG.

+1. Upgraded a few Epi LP's myself. An UOA5 in a '59B gives you warmth and mids, and more dynamics. In the neck a PGN or '59N is ideal.

I have two EPI LP's with 59B/59N.... No complaints... Very good and versatile.

Re: Opinions Wanted:P/U's for Epiphone Les Paul

The one potential drawback to a '59N is it can be a little bassy in some LP's, which is easily fixed by raising the pole pieces and lowering the PU on the bass side.

In the neck slot, an A5 magnet has a sharp high end, plenty of bass, and scooped mids. An A2 has a softer top, looser bottom, and the ample mids give it a 'bigger' sound. In my LP, the PGN was a little too warm and rounded so I put an A3 in it, for more treble.

Almost all PAF's are going to sound pretty bright in the bridge, which is why I use two 250K pots and usually along with warm magnets. Takes off the excess treble, and that balances the EQ amd makes the mids more prominent. Gives a fuller, richer tone. UOA5's are nice because they have those A2-type vintage dymanics, but with a little more treble, output, and firmer low end. To me, UOA5's are a 'product-improved' A2.

Re: Opinions Wanted:P/U's for Epiphone Les Paul

Or, you could just use a regular old 59 and turn the tone down a notch....

I have never found PAFs of any sort to be "too bright" in the bridge. That's the place where I usually want maximum potential brightness! Again - you can always turn it down, but you can't add it if it isn't there.

A PG is only 2 conductor, so page wiring in the neck will be a bit of a task/surgery.

Also, the wood in an Epi may handle the bass better than a real slab of mahogany.

Re: Opinions Wanted:P/U's for Epiphone Les Paul

+1. Just turn the tone down if it's too bright. But if you want more mids you're going to have to put in an UOA5 or A2 or A4. But, no harm in using those knobs on your guitar. I personally much prefer the PG in the neck over the '59

The Pearly is actually a 4 conductor cable. Easily splits or parallel.

My PG isn't boomy at all in my Epi LP.
