Orange Micro Terror?

Does anybody have any experience with this amp? 20 watts solid state power/tube pre amp. I'm considering getting one and the clips I've heard sound pretty groovy but I'm still undecided.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I have 1 that I use as a live/gigging backup amp incase anything goes wrong with my main amp.

It's louder than you think for 20w SS, easilly giggable through a 2x12 with V30s, and sounds pretty good too. It works out pretty well to clean up by rolling back the guitars volume control and also takes a boost quite well too.

It's not the greatest sounding amp in the world, but it's more than enough to help out if I need it to.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I have one. If loud cleans are needed it won't do it. It can get fairly loud with the gain knob turned up though. This is where you must use it. You play it like an old Orange from the 70's. Set the gain to where it's giving a good distorted response with the guitar volume knob up high but to where it cleans up (mostly) by turning it down a few. I didn't like it with a Vintage 30, but it sounds pretty good with Greenbacks. It's the Orange sound. Nice and fat.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

It sounds like what I'm looking for then. Thanks. Maybe I'll run it through an A/B with my bugera for cleans.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

Nah, seek out a Tiny Terror or OR15. They're a tiny bit bigger, but can actually hit a decent volume.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I own the Micro Terror.

Pros:

-Orange-y gain/tone for dirt cheap
-Great bedroom jammer
-Can actually get pretty loud - if you crank it to max volume on a 4x12 you can actually make yourself audible at band volume. I did this at practice once just to see if I could pull it off.

Cons:

-Absolutely a one trick pony. It's got a cool sound, but you get one decent clean and one decent gain. Don't expect ANY versatility with this amp.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I couldn't be bothered to take my Splawn to practice last night so I just used the Micro Terror and a 1x12 and it was more than loud enough for the size room we practice in.

It wasn't the most convincing 80s Rock tone I've ever heard, but it sounded ok nonetheless :D

I wouldn't use it as my main amp, but as a live backup or for those times when I can't or don't want to take my main amps, it's more than up to the challenge.

Right. It's a practice amp not a gig amp. At least not with a drummer. Its not in the same league volume wise as a 22 watt tube Fender. To get on stage band volume out of it you need to run it with the gain way up and through a 4x12. If it's the distortion sound you want then great, but it must be a distorted sound to get to that volume.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I'm currently looking to upgrade my Mustang I. I have a good available deal for Orange Micro Terror with two upgraded 1x8 cabinets, but I'm bit unsure should I go for it...

I'd like to buy it because: I need to carry my amp around a lot, so it should be portable and sturdy. Half of my time I play in an apartment where I can't get tubes in to growl territory, and have to use headphones from 9 pm to 9 am. I bet it would sound much better than Mustang (I like that Orange growl, if this has it?). And because I could still use mustang for effects if I need, there's not much need for onboard effects.

On the other hand. I'm worried it doesn't sound what I'd hope it would. Can it get good cleans (I've heard it can, but some say it can't)? 20w SS sounds small, but some say this is louder than you're average SS amp? And apparently it's not very versatile, might be bad thing, but I don't really need more tha dark/bright and clean/growl + reverb options. which I think I could get from MT.

I really like my micro terror. To me it's an inspiring tone, but it doesn't sound that great through the headphones.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

Terrible sounding thru headphones.

Great practice amp but the 1x8 sounded like a plastic box to me. I find it fairly versatile as a practice amp. The tone sweep is pretty wide the gain control is very useful. I used it a rehearsal once for S & G's but running flat out is not it's strong point IME. Very Orange sounding, very reliable and a lot of fun. I use the Aux In a lot to work on tunes and what not.

I run a Dual Terror and an AD30 as my main rigs so it keeps it in the family.

I played one my buddy had trough the matching 1x8 cab and could not get a tone out of it to save my life. I ended up buying one and running it through a 1x15, 1x12 and 4x12 and absolutely love the tone of this thing. I am heading into the studio soon and I am thinking about using it to do my doubling tracks to contrast against my Marshall.

Swap out the stock tube for a Mullard (like $20) and it'll reduce the amount of fizz in the gain and it won't break up so easily (more clean headroom).

I would get the head, but avoid a 1x8 cabinet. Hughes & Kettner makes a 1x10 you can get used for about $100. Or if you want to go 1x12, get a Laney IRT112.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

Well, I ended up getting Tiny Terror instead. Though I did get the 1x8 cabinets too, because they had upgraded speakers worth double that I paid for them. I'm currently planning on building a 2x8 cabinet out of them. Maybe I glue those 1x8 faces on it's baffle for a proper looks :D

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I have an Orange Tiny Terror and Micro Dark.

The Micro Dark is more versatile than the Tiny Terror, it cleans up nicely.

Like all solid states, it tends to thin out if you crank it- so for louder volume I take the effects loop send and run it into by EVH 5150 III 50 watt tube amp, and it kills

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I own a Micro Dark and im very pleased with it, micros are so cute they look like toys but HELL!! those tiny thing are BEASTS!!
Pros:
- Fat and rich full tone
- Pretty loud (by far far louder than my Vox 30)
- This one have face melting gains
- I prefered the Micro Dark over Micro Terror because this one have In and Out for Effects

Cons:
- The volume is pretty low with the gain knob on low, you have to crank it to get it at decent volume
- Is not a versatile amp, for cleans only on low volume, everything else must be on monster mode

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

Back from the dead once again....

My MT was sounding a little dark and boxy and mmm just a little odd so figured I'd change the tube to see what difference it might make. It had a JJ 12AX7 in it that I guess it came with? Maybe I swapped it out but that would've been when I got it and I can't remember. So I had a few older pre's laying around and I popped in an old RCA 12AT7 and MIJ Westinghouse 12AX7 to see what they'd do. Well both of them got rid of that funky darkness so I guess I started eating up the JJ. The Westinghouse put out a little more gain than the RCA and sounded about how this little thing should sound. The RCA still had more gain than I really need but it added a little more depth or richness to the sound and clearly had a better tone than the JJ or the Westinghouse.

We'll that's all I thought it was kind of cool so figured I'd add it to the Knowledge Base

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I almost bought one. Tried one with a SSS Strat and a 2x12 and I loved cranking the master and having the gain low.
It compressed beautifully and was plenty loud.

Re: Orange Micro Terror?

I keep thinking about a Microdark.

Microdark was my first amp but I sold it because I wasn't a fan of the cleans and the tone control instead of a 3 band EQ however if you use pedals for gain and EQ it works good for that
