Original '64 Strat pickups that show connectivity between every pole and +/- termate.

Re: Original '64 Strat pickups that show connectivity between every pole and +/- term

A decent winder will take measurements from all aspects of the wind of a pickup in an attempt to do the best job of replicating it (for future clients too if it can be made into a set). In that way you would never in any rational way of thinking try moving poles out and then in as some idea of a hair-brained experiment, that would pretty much make an accurate rewind impossible.

An accurate "rewind" involves trashing the wire anyway, so what you do or dont attempt before is somewhat irrelevant

Great info guys! I have to apologize because I got that strat unassembled in a box of parts in '74. I had studied some electronics at the local library that confirmed that a shorted winding on a transformer presented a direct short to the driver which was in our case, a guitar string. So only losses in the system even let it vibrate at all!

NOPE. An accurate rewind involves documenting as you unwind....TPL, tension etc. Thats what real winders do. If you've destroyed half of the pickup (what your idiotic idea proposed) then you can kiss accuracy away.

Re: Original '64 Strat pickups that show connectivity between every pole and +/- term

What happened here is the insulation broke down on the wire and they electrically shorted to the magnets.

This is a bad situation. Because the start of the coil is connected to ground, the magnets are probably close to ground potential. So at least in this case they won’t buzz when you touch them.

But at some point the wire will corrode (aluminum touching copper) all the way and the pickup will be dead.

Everything you said is good David except, there is no Aluminum in the wire nor the AlNICO magnets.

Sorry, that’s incorrect

Al-Ni-Co is Aluminum/Nickel/Cobalt

The majority of the magnet is iron, but there’s about 8-12% aluminum in them.

This is a joke, right? There's no aluminum in the Aluminum-Nickel-Cobalt magnets?

And I suppose there's no cheese in a cheeseburger either.

depends on the "cheese" could be mostly plastic
