original first issue Floyd

A Toronto store is selling a rare first issue Floyd.... $200 Canadian without the lock nut..... This is the bridge without the tail fin and the fine tuners.... Just like the first ones Eddie had in 1979-81-ish.....

How rare are these things?

Re: original first issue Floyd

Are they that rare? I've spotted a few on German eBay for really low prices. I guess they're a bit unknown, and when people hear 'Floyd Rose', they'll almost always think of the big units with the fine tuners. I guess they're not quite as popular nowadays?

Re: original first issue Floyd

They´re OK ... the Fine Tuners are a definite improvement over the old school ones IMO...

They generally aren´t worth much to players, more to collectors / 80s fetischists and such....

Re: original first issue Floyd

I think it beats a Wilkinson tonally. It's more substantial. It's great if you have a guitar already with Floyd studs and you end up swapping necks for a non-lock nut neck. I've have one here that's been on several guitars over the past 15 years. I always like it.

Re: original first issue Floyd

They're similar in design to the Fender locking tremolo on the Deluxe strats- Fender basically copied Floyd on that design

Re: original first issue Floyd

Good point! Actually that WAS a Floyd. It came out when Fender owned FR, but I think he designed it. It's an awesome design. Those are better than the old non-locking floyds IMO. They're easier to adjust and they look and feel nicer. So no matter how high the old Floyds get, if you can always buy these as Fender parts, they'll be a superior bargain.

Ya i have one of those Fender Strat Deluxe Floyd bridges sitting new in box but have yet to install it on anything... Local store sold it for cheap on a clearance sale.....

I was thinking about this old Floyd for the VH fan who wanted to build a VH strat like the ones he had in the early 80's before the updated Floyd came along... i have photos of Eddie with the Black and Yellow guitar in late 79/80 with the original floyd on it.... kind of cool looking! I don't think i'll buy it as without the fine tuners i don't think it'll work as well as i want

"Old Non Locking Floyds"??? AFAIK there´s no such thing as a real Floyd that isn´t double locking, including the very first ones.... Or do you mean those POS FR III knockoffs that were popular around the end of the 80s that Mighty Mite still sells???:eek13:

Re: original first issue Floyd

I think it was originally used on the Jeff Beck strat, and I think the first ones had the Floyd Rose logo on them. When I said it "was a Floyd" it was in response to jmh151 who said they copied the original non-fine tuner floyd. I was saying it was a Floyd Rose product, not a copy. It only looks like a ripoff now, because I don't think it has the Floyd Rose name on it anywhere anymore.

So anyway, both that, and the old EVH floyds without fine tuners lock at the bridge but should use regular nuts, so I don't know what you'd call them. It seems you could call them "single locking" but that usually refers to a lock nut, but crap string through at the bridge.

Re: original first issue Floyd

By golly, you're right Zerb: these were used with a locking nut:

I would think that they'd be a complete pain in the ass to tune without the fine tuners. Everytime I lock the nut on my Floyds, it sends it slightly out of tune.

Re: original first issue Floyd

+1!
Had a strat with that setup once....dunno where it is anymore...some "friend" borrowed it, and I never saw it again.
It had a single zebra JB from the early 80's as well.
