Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

I see Kahler is back in business. To those guys who have used both, which do you find to be the better vibrato system? what are pros/cons of them?

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

Interesting question Xeromous
i want to add one question :
is the Kahler bridge .. i mean, can i ALSO pull the whammy bar Up and down as in traditiional FLoyd rose bridges? or? Another question.. is it supposed to prevent strings to detune better than traditional floyd bridges?

I already know it gives you all the flexibility of a floyd. I'm more than sure than you can pull up on it a good amount too.

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

I think I like the tone from a Floyd better, but I like the ease of use with the kahler. I have both right now. The floyd is on a strat warmoth and the Kahler is on a 1980 Les Paul Deluxe. The deluxe does not sustain as much. I think the Kahler sucks up some of the tone. Yes, you can also pull on the Kahler. It stays in tune very well I think.

I agree that the tone is better in the Floyd unit. IMO they are superior buildt, and stays better in tune as well. Ease of use is just a matter of experience.

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

I thought I was the only dude with a Kahler on a Les Paul!! Mine was on a '82 Les Paul Standard and I used it for over 10 years. I think Kahlers really kill the sustain because the strings rest on a roller and not a hard edge like on a Floyd. Use the bar at all and the note craps out. Let me put it this way: I own 5 guitars- all with Floyds or knockoffs. I wouldn't buy a guitar with a Kahler. My guitar did stay in tune pretty well with the Kahler and it was solid after I installed the heavy springs and bar. You could rest your palm on the Kahler and the guitar wouldn't go out of tune like it can on a floating Floyd. Right now, I am loving a non-recessed Floyd. I have blocked off two of my guitar so I don't have to worry about them going out of tune all of the time.

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

I can vouch only for the OFR but I've had this G&L with an OFR for 3-4 weeks now and the sucker really stays in tune. I haven't had to do anything to it since I set it up. This was not the case on 2 previous guitars with licensed FR's. Very happy with it

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

I picked up an old BC rich a while ago that I'm restoring with a Kahler flyer tremolo system, and i've got an old kramer with a non-recessed OFR.

The OFR on the kramer has never gone out of tune due to using the trem bar. not a single time. this is partially due to the fact that its not a floating floyd, but its pretty damn good for me.

The Kahler on the BC rich is a tempremental little beast, I've tried doing light vibrato with it and its instantly gone out of tune. This is also partially due to the plastic nut and the location of the lock (behind the nut). Which IMO kinda destroys the point of having a locknut. I heard they had to do this to get around floyd patents though.

Granted, the flyer was the budget kahler model, and when it does stay in tune I like the smoothness of its operation and vibrato more than the floyd, but the floyd is capable of more radical dives. I'm gonna see if I can alleviate part of the tuning problem with a graphtech nut, but i'll put my vote in with the OFR.

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

My impression of them was that the Floyd Rose made the guitar almost brittle bright. I liked the Kahlers. I started wanting one on a Les Paul back the metal days of Y&T when Dave Meniketti had a Kahler on his.

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

ya know, this actually gets me wonderin, has anybody had any experience with a kahler trem system other than the flyer? How stable are they tuning-wise?

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

The Flyer was the Cheapo version of the PRO (Different saddles and materials), and was IMHO a POS

the 23xx series on the other hand with the brase or steel cams and rollers (different models = different combos) sounded and worked much better, and these are the "classic" kahler systems, the same ones that are now available again ;)

I personally used to prefer Kahler PROs, but have taken a liking to Floyds....I´m gonna try to find out whether that´s just because I haven´t used my Flying V in a while or not ;)

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

The Kahler has a few very potent design flaws that IMO make it less appealing than the Floyd.

If they had to put their locking nut behind a traditional nut due to patent issues, there are lots of other things they could have done to make it better. The use of a zero fret would have been a LOT better than a regular plastic nut.

Re: Original Floyd Rose vs. Kahler

Hey RGN, how did you blocked the tremolo?
and for the record the OFR sounds better!!!

I have done it two ways-

1) Cut a piece of plywood (i think it was 3/4") out and fit it into the recession on the top of the guitar so the Floyd rests against it. I loosened up the springs so it sat down a bit more firmly on the wood.

2) This may be tougher to destribe. You know the piece of heavy steel that the springs hook into on the floyd? You access it through the hole in the back of the guitar. I cut out a small slice of wood and stuck it between this piece of steel and the side of the inside of the trem cavity. This heavy steel piece rests against the wood. I can take a pic if you really are thinking of doing it.... works very well.
