Orrange amps

Re: Orrange amps

I quite like the Rockerverb 50, and the AD140 is good in a marshall-esque vein. The Tiny Terror is fun, though it gets pretty EL84 sounding at higher volumes. Gives a very good classic rock sound at medium volumes. The cabs are great.

Watch out for the AD30. Those are known to have transformer issues (Orange chooses it's transformers on a 'lowest bidder' basis, and the 30s appear to have suffered the most from that policy). Apart from that, build quality is among the better of the PCB, mass manufactured brands. I'm not sure about the chinese-made tiny terror, though.

Bear in mind that apart from some reissues, modern oranges don't really sound like old oranges. The modern amps have been progressively pushed toward a more generic, marshall-esque tone, basically in an attempt to improve sales: A kid walks into a store, see an orange and goes 'cool!'. Then they plug in and it sounds familiar to them, so they buy it. I've seen it happen countless times. If they heard the old Orange tone when they plugged in, they probably would think twice about whether it was the amp for them. Old Oranges are cool, but it's a different kind of tone, and not necessarily what a lot of people are looking for in an amp head.

If you're after the old orange thing, look into Matamp's reissues. Cool amps, and better made.

Re: Orrange amps

i've played a rockerverb 50 and it sounded great. i have heard some reliability issues with the 50 watt rockerverbs and the AD30s but also heard that orange handles warranty stuff really well. the one i played was getting a very nice jerry cantrell 'degradation trip' sound. it was sooooo good that i didnt bother with the clean channel or adjusting anything so i really cant tell you how versatile it is or if the clean channel is any good.

Re: Orrange amps

They are sweet, they bring the heavy, and are stylish to boot. Buy a full stack...and while you're there pick me up a 4x12.

Re: Orrange amps

anyone have gigging experience with the Tiny Terror? Is is noisey? Does it cut? I've been thinking of getting it for some small club blues jams. Tried one out, seemed very noisey, but could have been the environment, lights, electricity, etc.

I have a TT and it's not noisy. It totally rips for harder classic rock playing, like ZZ Top, early Van Halen, etc. I play it through my Avatar open-back 2x12 loaded with a G12H30 and a V30.

It's not any noisier than any other amp with similar volume/gain abilities.

I was tracking in a studio the last three days, and a local pop/hardcore band had set up a studio in a spare space next door. I checked out their stuff and there was a tiny terror and a Korg-era AC15 doing all the work, while a recto and 800 head sat dormant...

Re: Orrange amps

There's a whole thread from a few months back you might want to check out too. Obviously I'm not saying ignore this one, as there's always new feedback [forgive the pun], but thought you'd like to know. there was a whole Orange vs. Marshall vs. Hi-Watt thing going.

Re: Orrange amps

I own an orange, the rocker 30. I love this amp, it's a little monster for sure. I play basically the whole gamut of rock type music and it pulls it off nicely. What I really love about this amp is how simple it is. The clean ch only has a volume knob, which may be a turnoff for some but I think it's cool. The distortion is sweet on this amp, it has more gain than I could ever utilize, and I like to play metal and hardcore stuff from time to time. The amp responds to different guitars really well, it brings out the natural tone of the guitar more than any other amp I've played. If you want a real crunchy thick sounding amp in a marshall vein, you really can't go wrong with an orange.
