Orville By Gibson Les Paul

After hearing so many good things about these guitars I'd been hunting round for one for a few months, and a few days ago a 1990 LP Custom Black Beauty arrived on my doorstep, courtesy of Ebay. I was pretty excited getting her out and plugging her in, and after a few hours playing I am quite frankly blown away by this guitar.

Fit and nitro finish is excellent, frets are lovely and wide with a gorgeous fingerboard, and she weighs about one pound more than my Gibson LP Classic. Sustain is out of this world, superior to the Gibby's, but it's when you plug it in that the difference really shows...I don't know whether it's the Gibson buckers, the extra weight, the long tenon neck, the quality and age of the wood or what, but tonally the sound is just vintage Les Paul in a way that my Classic cannot come close to. The punch, clarity and reasonance are outstanding.

My wife, whose only usual comments are 'turn it down', didn't realise I'd got a new axe, and when I was first playing it she shouted through from the kitchen to ask what I'd done to my guitar (meaning the Classic) - I asked her why and she said that it sounded 'really rich and deep, much better than usual'.

There is simply no comparison between these two axes, the Orville blows the Gibson out of the water. I am definitely getting rid of the Ceramic Pups and sticking some SDs into the Classic to see what difference that makes, as that should tell me how much of the Orville's superiority is in the Pups at least.

If you're an LP lover and you see one, go for it - I really cannot speak highly enough about this guitar, and I suspect the Gibby might go on the Bay soon enough as unless new pups make a huge difference, it's not going to get much playing time...

This thread is useless without pictures!!!!! Come on, show some skin!

That's cool dude! Really cool, in fact.

How much you hope to get for the LP, if you sell it?

Good question - probably about £800, although the Bay is getting weird at this time of year. I saw a beautiful Tobacco '89 standard with Seths go for £820 recently, which is silly cheap for a great condition Paul over here.

Oh, pics...

Re: Orville By Gibson Les Paul

Those gold pup screws are tasty. I'd change the pickguard to be black, gold, black, gold, black, but that's a small thing. A very nice looking guitar!

Re: Orville By Gibson Les Paul

Cheers - I think the pickguard may come off altogether, I used to hate Pauls without pickguards but in my old age I am changing my mind.

Nice guitar! I can't tell from the pictures on this monitor, is the fretboard rosewood or ebony?

The one thing keeping me from buying an MIJ LP Custom is a lot of them do not have ebony fretboards.

Re: Orville By Gibson Les Paul

Nice score! I've been looking at Orvilles on ebay recently too. I think I watched that auction!

If you hadn't let your wife see both guitars at the same time you might have got away with it! :D

It's rosewood - I actually prefer it; one of the things I disliked about my old 80s Gibson Custom was the ebony board.

I know...schoolboy error.

There have been a few good ObGs popping up recently, but they are starting to approach Gibson prices. There is a black Custom going from Germany at the moment that is still stupidly cheap though, on the Bay, just in case you fancy spending some money...

Simon, you should do a search for Les Paul Custom under Gibson on eBay. I've never seen more customs available than right now...and a bunch from the early/mid 70's that going for reasonable prices, along with some newer ones for good deals.

Wish I was in a position to buy one right now, because there are several I'd really, really like to have.

This is the way I feel constantly. If I had the resources I'd just keep buying Les Pauls. Nothing else gives me the same hit! :alcoholic

Check out the Edwards/ESP LPC's then.
Those have Ebony.
Check out my review on this forum of my Edwards LPC John Sykes.
