Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

Re: Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

I like bridge pickups like the C5 and 59B, so the Brobucker was right up my alley, and I was immediately happy with what I heard, as soon as I installed it.

I didn't need two, so I only bought one. In retrospect, I should have gotten 2 or 3, because it's a pickup I'd use on almost any guitar. I'm wondering if Duncan has any plans to release it. They should call it the 59 Hot.

I think Evan made the postion of the Seymore Duncan quite clear during the 10k discussions. It won't be happening.

This doesn't sound like the pickup you want....It has a pretty hot output and the mids stand out more...The pickup is more aggressive than a vintage style bridge pickup..I'd say the VPAF Hot is more inline with something like a Custom Custom or the C5..

I think you misunderstood him. He wants an *upside down* smiley face. A regular smiley face would be the '59. No mids.

According to you, the VHPAF is an "upside-down" smiley face, or a "frown", in that the highs are tamed, the lows aren't boomey, and the mids are the stand-out.

That's also the tone of the CC, except the CC doesn't have a the same clarity or transparency of a humbucker that's under 10k. He's saying he likes the "frown" factor of the CC, but not the 14k "sludge" effect. It's not that it's got too much "mids", but that it's too compressed.

The Virtual Hot PAF sounds EXACTLY like the pickup he wants, per YOUR description, unless I'm thoroughly confused......and I AM on beer #4......:smack:

Heading for the 'fridge for #5...............

Re: Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

Thanks a lot Majestic for clarifying that, that's exactly what I meant. I have an email in at Dimarzio, just to see what they say. But it is nice to know that the VHPAF might still be a good choice for me.

Sorry bout that guys and thanks for clearing me up on that....:smack:

My description still stands though...

Re: Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

if you want the frown face, try an alnico II magnet. itll give you the mids you want with a different top end

I suppose that they still have the specs on hand...would hate to have to pay normal custom shop prices though.

Sound like cool pickups.

so are you saying almost any pup will be boosted in the mids in that way with an A2? or are you talking about putting one in a specific pup to achieve that?

Boosted probably isn't the correct word. A2 mags don't provide the stout Hi and Lows of an A5 creating the effect of more midrange

Re: Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

has anyone tried either a VVPAF or VHPAF with an A2 mag? course i don't know if that would kill that 3d quality it has?

I tryed it and it was absolutely terrible! That "air technology" is all about keeping the A5 magnet for the tightness...Anything less than the A5 is muddy and it takes all the punch and heat away from an otherwise great pickup....

Actually I tryed an A4 in the VPAF Neck pickup and it really sucked bad! :)

In alot of ways I've been the forum guinea pig on certain things over the years.....:smack: :laugh2:

Re: Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

Your results make sense....I sort of assumed that would be the case.

I notice they use an "aired-out" ceramic in their Bluesbucker P-90 pickup. I assume that's to warm it up a bit. I assume it sounds like a "tighter" Alnico 5, without the boom.

I've always wanted to "warm-up" my Evolution a bit. It's not my main guitar, so I've been sort of lazy with it.

BTW, I've seen some confusion on this, so as a reminder to basically anybody who cares, the "air" technique that DiMarzio uses is NOT what creates their so-called "3-D" quality. It's their "Virtual Vintage" techniques that do that.

The "air" technique is merely a way to soften the effect of the magnet, in attempt to simulate vintage or degaussed magnets.

That's why there's:
PAF Classic (a PAF with a cover on it)
Air Classic (a PAF with a cover on it & magnet spacers)
Virtual PAF (a PAF with magnet spacers & the Virtual Vintage technology).
Virtual Hot PAF (same as above, but overwound)

There.....I *think* I nailed it. Right?

Re: Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

Hey we got a good price, they had to skimp on teh tape! :)

Re: Out From Hiding For A Brobucker Review..

The thing is most covered pups aren't taped up like the open coil versions. There is no need for it as the cover protects the coils. Obviously I haven't seen your particular pups but this doesn't sound unusual at all to me

The cover was barely soldered on the plate on my BroBucker....You'd have to think that alot of us would want to go without a cover because of the dual creme bobbins...With that being the case,I was putoff by the tape coming off the bobbins...The tape didn't even go all the way around the bobbins...This hasn't been the norm in my case whenever I've taken a cover off of any other Duncan pickup..The pickup sounds great and I fixed it and all is cool now....Just a conversation piece at this point...
