P90 Tele

Re: P90 Tele

Why don't you listen to a Jimmy Eat World record?

Jim Adkins has a signature Telecaster with Seymour Duncan P90 pickups. You can buy it right from Fender. No mystery.

Fender said:
When Jim Adkins, guitarist and frontman for platinum-selling Jimmy Eat World, cheerfully challenged Fender with designing his perfect guitar, a collaboration began that resulted in the new JA-90. We sat down with Adkins and went over his old Fender TC-90 spec by spec, making some important changes that subsequently produced this unique new model. Features include a mahogany neck set into a semi-hollow ash body, Seymour Duncan® soapbar pickups, independent volume and tone controls, an Adjusto-Matic™ bridge and anchored tailpiece. Sweetness, indeed!

Re: P90 Tele

I6: I've been gassing over that Tele for a long time now! Their best artist model IMO and I don't even listen to Jimmy Eat World.

The guy's playing British blues, and as a fellow bluesman, I don't see any benefit to "fender twang."

I've never understood many of your comments but now that I know you judge tone with your eyes they make more sense to me.

Personally, as a blues-lover I hear many places for "Fender twang" in "British blues" whenever I throw on Clapton, Hendrix, Jeff Beck, or Zeppelin I.

Here is another P-90 Tele, sounds great to me...

I have been toying with the P-90 idea in general a lot lately. Even considering putting some Phat Cats in my Carvin CS-4, I really like the PG set in there, but my curiosity is high for sure...

I have made the switch almost entirely (to P90s, that is.)

There's really no notable drawback to them. They are truly the best of both worlds.

Re: P90 Tele

That's an alternative. However I think the phat staple is closer to a DeArmond than a p90 or Filtertron.

I didn't know. The only Filtertrons I've heard were on a Gretsch. They sounded very bright and articulate. If I hadn't been looking I would not have believed I was hearing an archtop hollowbody.

Re: P90 Tele

eh, im not sure about that. i have a "tele" with two buckers and while it has some characteristics of a tele it sure doesnt sound much like a typical tele. there is snap to the notes from the strings thru body design but it sounds pretty different.

a p90 would be closer to a tele sound but its still gonna sound quite a bit different. ive played a few teles with p90s and always loved the bridge pup. some neck pups were to dark and round but some were great. with the right guitar and right pups im sure it could be a killer combo

I agree. I think Fender guitars with Gibson style pickups (ie: P-90 and/or humbuckers) sound more like Gibsons than Fenders.

I have a couple of MIJ Squier Strats with humbuckers in them - when I plug them in they have more in common sound-wise with a Gibson guitar than a Fender.
