PAF pickup recommendations

Yeah, there are so many choices....looking for a set that would sound more single coil like, without that midrange sound that happens when combining the coils. Or at least very minimal...

Going in a PRS custome 24 SE (mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard )Something in the used range of duncan/dimarzio, nothing like $500 a set....

Thanks

an humbucker from hell and a bluesbucker. or a seth set with coil split

Re: PAF pickup recommendations

Humbucker from Hell by DiMarzio is built exactly for that.

Re: PAF pickup recommendations

I've got an SE Custom 24 that I literally was ready to trade/sell before putting in a set of Seth Lovers.
GREAT pickup. I got the 4 conductor with the ability to coil split.
Very warm/articulate pickups and the guitar is rapidly becoming my favorite.

Re: PAF pickup recommendations

I have a Telecaster Deluxe copy that I am trying to figure out what to replace the pickups with. It has a set of cheap Wilkinson PAFs in it now and I just don't like them at all. Any ideas? Seth Lovers are on my list.

Re: PAF pickup recommendations

Love Seths and Antiquitys, but I also have a fondness for the potted Gibson A2 Burstbucker 1 & 2. In my Les Paul Historics, they deliver the PAF balls with a bit of an edge...like a very beefy Telecaster. If I'm playing mellower music or for an older crowd, I might choose my LP Elegant with Classic '57s, but for rock and hard blues, the Burstbuckers are the ticket.

The advantage of the Seths and Antiquitys...they work well for anything I throw at them.

Re: PAF pickup recommendations

I would be tempted to put in a regular set of 59s or hotter with the option of series/ parallel - parallel humbuckers can get very close to single-coil tones.

This is an important note. These 2 might not be the absolute best for a given situation, but they're pretty good at everything. They might even djent.

Well, high preamp gain and high volume would make them squeal.

Re: PAF pickup recommendations

My go-to recommendations here are lower wind unpotted pickups, except you said you are "looking for a set that would sound more single coil like, without that midrange sound that happens when combining the coils."

The typical suspects here, Seths, Antiquities, Burstbuckers, all seem to have that midrange honk. It is more noticeable at the neck, somewhat less in the middle, somewhat less in the bridge, but it's there.

The Wolfetone Dr. Vintage set I had did not really have that, at least not as prominently, so this may be one option. In general, I think I'd consider something a touch hotter and potted. Maybe a standard production Pearly Gates set or the Slash set or something similar.

Re: PAF pickup recommendations

I'll add, the guitar plays a huge role in this. My 16 Traditional honks more than my 93 Standard.
