So yeah, I'm thinking of putting an EMG 81 in the bridge of my Les paul but i had active pickups when clean so I want to keep my passives in the middle and neck positions. What does having actives with passives do to my wiring and whatnot? What will be different than just having all passives?

well wothout quiet complicated mods it wouldnt be possiblre to use the actives with the passives...ie bridge and middle

Actually, so long as the passive pickups and active pickups don't share any volume or tone controls, and their signal stays seperate until the switch or output jack, there's no real problem in mixing passive and active. If you read EMG's site, they'll tell you how to wire it somewhere.

The only real down side would be possible volume drop if going from someting like an 81 to a 59.

True, but you'd get that same problem (maybe to a lesser degree?) if you used something like an invader and a '59.

Sometimes you can get a popping sound when you switch from the passive to the active pick-up.

...
"Honey, what was that sound, did you just crap your pants?"
"No dear, I switched from my alnico II pro neck to my 81 bridge."

Re: passive with active

I realize this is a major bump for the thread but, have any advances been made since this time..?

Obviously the separate controsl would be the obvious answer but, what about using the same control - would a push/pull volume work..?
