Paul Reed Smith SE Pauls Guitar Thoughts?

Hi guys! Has anyone tried out the PRS SE Pauls Guitar? I play in a 70's/80's classic rock/hard rock/hair metal cover band in standard E tuning. I've been reading up on different guitars as I'm getting ready to get another guitar or two to keep the miles off my older MIK Epiphone LP Custom. I kinda like this finish:

My main rig for rehearsals is Mesa Tremoverb into the Marshall 4x12: My pedalboard, MXR Classic Chorus and a Modtone Clean Boost (For Solos) through the effects loop of Mesa. I'm also going to be getting another tube amp head to retire my Mesa to home use as it's old and I'm trying to keep the miles off it as well.

I've never been impressed with the tone or playability of any SE that I've tried. There are some very beautiful ones out there though.

I've had the opposite experience. I've played several and all were nice. I settled
on a Turquoise SE Custom 24 Floyd. Not a fan of their pickups but my SE 24 Floyd
plays as well as some of their core gits I've played and owned. I think they're awesome
for the money!

I don’t think the SE Paul’s Guitar is even out yet, so I doubt anyone has played one.

Most of the SEs I’ve played were quite good. I had an SE Custom 22 Semi-Hollow for awhile that I really liked. I sold it because I had issues switching back and forth between the medium jumbo frets that were on my other PRS and the smaller fretwire they use on the SEs, but if it weren’t for that I would’ve kept it.

Some SEs seem to get more love than others (to a certain extent you get what you pay for), but I suspect that if there’s an SE that PRS puts extra effort into it’ll be the Paul’s Guitar.

i have an older se and it plays great. it sounds great too but everythings been swapped out at this point. already had a new nut when i got it as well

Re: Paul Reed Smith SE Pauls Guitar Thoughts?

I saw them at NAMM, but I don't think any are actually on the market yet.

Re: Paul Reed Smith SE Pauls Guitar Thoughts?

The nuts and tuners on PRS SE guitars are utter garbage.

Otherwise, they're brilliant guitars. I have an SE Nick Catanse and an SE Mike Mushok. I used to have an Ibanez Prestige, but I traded it (for an LTD made in the same factory as the PRS SE's, BTW) because I never picked it up anymore because I play the PRS SE's all the time now.

Re: Paul Reed Smith SE Pauls Guitar Thoughts?

I have been playing PRS SE guitars since they first came out and have owned about a dozen over the years. Still have several. I have never had any trouble with the tuners or nuts on any of them. I do think the older ones had better wood, but the recent ones are good guitars for the money as well. They REALLY benefit from a pickup upgrade. They work great with D'Addario 9.5 gauge strings.

I own a 277 and have played a friend's Mushok, and they're both very good guitars, excellent for the price.

Re: Paul Reed Smith SE Pauls Guitar Thoughts?

They're a bit pricy for being MIK, although the one I had was extremely well made and played great once I set it up properly.

P'up wise was not so good, the S/S/S with ceramic Mags was nothing to write home about, so my friend Dave Plummer, aka Zhangbucker made a custom-made set with three different polepiece spacings, plain 3rd stagger and an slightly overwound A5/A2 bridge p'up, which made the instrument shine so bright, that it became my money-maker every time the project called for a Strat sound. Until I sold it, it made about forty projects in a five year period.

I haven't tried one lately, but some years ago
I tried a few and really want one or two
But the wide flat neck was the one thing I couldn't do

Re: Paul Reed Smith SE Pauls Guitar Thoughts?

I just bought a PRS SE Custom 24 Zebrawood. I picked it up, played it for an hour, and basically decided on the spot I had to have it. Which honestly happens maybe once a decade with all the guitars I try.

I have never gotten along with glossy finished necks and double humbucker guitars. Until this one. It's glorious. Does everything from Jazzy cleans, to Allman Brothers grit, to screaming Metal. And well.

Agree that the tuners are trash. Getting locking ones shortly. Haven't had any nut issues. Yet.
