Of course this is a subjective topic but yet, in your opinion I am sure the JB>PG. In my opinion the Alnico II Pro Bridge>Jazz bridge>PG>JB in the right guitar. In a superstrat though I would pick the JB. It really depends on the guitar for me.

I've heard of JB pickups being fickle in some Les Pauls depending on the build. Maybe I got lucky but I have one of these older Epiphones that weighs a ton, so I guess that helps bring in the darker tones. I honestly don't have an issue with its brightness. The PG was bright and brittle and very quiet for what I do. I'm borderline heavy metal tone but not playing metal songs. The PG just never cut it. It always sounded like glass falling on concrete in the live mix.

Now it was a pretty ballsy blues jammer. I stuck another in a backup Epi that I unfortunately had to sell off. I never played it on stage because it didn't cut through, but at home for doodling it sounded great through a cleaned up amp.

The Pearly Gates is all about touch sensitivity, detail and articulation. Using that pickup to hammer out power chords, chug, djent or wail is like bringing a Cadillac to a drag race.

Sure, it will wail and scream... but those aren't it's strong points. I wouldn't suggest it for metal... I'd actually steer away from most A2 42AWG pickups for intensely aggressive musical genres.

It's difficult for any metal player to go from a high output pickup to a low one... they hit the amp soooo differently, that it's usually a bad idea.

Gonna be much harder to find sustain now that hes torched the guitar.... Sacrificed the Epi for a tongue ring IMNSHO was probably worth it.

I thought it would work. I was definitely in a GNR phase and I thought, hey its alnico 2 but hotter, so maybe I can get this hot hot Slash sound. Nope... not even a Billy Gibbons sound.

It just ultimately wasn't what I was looking for

Well Slash and Billy Gibbons sure can get their own tones out of their Alnico II Pro and Pearly Gates pickups so obviously we can chalk your experience up to equipment fail and user error. I think that's probably a fair assessment. /thread

It had a lot to do with gear and inexperience. I'm in a better place with my sound and my rig thanks largely in part to Orange Amplification and Seymour Duncan.

I think we've all learned something today. Any problem can be solved by A) burning your guitar or B) getting the right gear for the job. Stay frosty people.

Hey, some first generation 'Stangs were beasts.

I wouldn't do it, but you should still be able to get heavy with a PG.

PG for neck only IMO. Like what I have heard from the neck PG. *****Havent tried it out yet***** Hioefully soon. Love my JB in the bridge though. Harmonics for days.

The JB I've found to be pretty versatile. I had it in my old rig which was a Marshall JCM2000 DSL50 (which actually sounded nice), and I moved it into my Orange rig (Dark Terror + 2 1×12 Orange cabs) and the guitar just sounds killer either way. With the PG it was always a struggle to get the sound not so bright and still full... and it was quiet to my ears... barely, but it was. It also didn't hold well against a redburst Epi with a set of 59s. I liked the 59s so much more that I began using my backup guitar more often. Once I got the JB tho, it set well with everything.
