Peavey SC-2 vs Epiphone Les Paul 100?

Artie

Peaveyologist
My favorite local music store has both of these on sale for the same beans. I need a 2-vol/2-tone axe for some wiring experiments.

The Peavey is set neck with a basswood body. (good/not-so-good)

The Epiphone is a bolt-on neck with a mahogany body. (not-so-good/good)

Pretty much every guitar I have is a bolt-on neck, so I'd kinda like to try a set neck, but I'm probably making too big of a deal about it. The guy in the store, (who's opinion I respect), said Epiphone hands down. I personally like Peavey products and both guitars are Chinese/Indonesian. (I like Epi too.)

I'm probably going to pull the trigger this weekend. What do you think?

And, by the way, both felt good in my hands. The trim level on the LP is definitely nicer.

Thanks all;
Artie

I bought an Ibanez Artist-100 for those wiring experiments... got it off ebay for... $140 shipped, iirc.

Mahogany body, set neck, bound body & fingerboard, decent pups to begin with, and a great neck.

Oh,cool.
Glad to see "something's" going on there.
You a West-sider?

Yeah, Kevin just hosted a Taylor guitar show there a couple weeks ago. It was pretty cool. And yes, I'm a west-sider. ;)
Right behind the cemetery where Ronnie Van Zant's headstone is. (Not the body. Just the headstone. Damn grave vandals.)

But isn't that a 3-knob guitar? I need classic dual-vol/dual-tone ala Les Paul.
Cool guitar otherwise.

Re: Peavey SC-2 vs Epiphone Les Paul 100?

It's just going to be down to how it feels in your hands, and maybe how it looks.

Neither of them seem to be great combos of tonewoods and construction, just get what you feel like and roll with it.

With either one I would expect to hear the sound of the pickups dominating the acoustic nature of the axe, so I wouldn't sweat the details for a cheapie/beater/wiring-experiment piece.

Re: Peavey SC-2 vs Epiphone Les Paul 100?

D'oh, it is. I don't think you'd have any problems wedging another pot in the control cavity, but you'd have to be careful with your spacing or it'd look like it.

You could always do stacked V/Ts... but then what would you do with that third knob?

I mean, what's not to like?

Re: Peavey SC-2 vs Epiphone Les Paul 100?

I had a LP100 LH back in the day. I put an EMG 81/85 in it but ended up with an 81/81 combo. The guitars are nice, I had no complaints with it. You'll have the people saying they're junk, but they're comparing it to a high end model so no sh!t. For the price it is a nice guitar, at the very least it could be a back-up guitar (with better pickups installed)

Re: Peavey SC-2 vs Epiphone Les Paul 100?

I'm willing to bet for the price of one of those new you could get a used Agile or Epi with a set neck.....even a PRS SE.....I see the SE's going for 250 and under on my local Craigslist all the time....

That opinion counts too. :cool2:

Kevin's Musician Superstore, up off of Ramona/Lennox. Used to be Music Depot.

Cool! Last time I drove out to Music depot, I was greeted to tumbleweeds....

I got a card advertising the Taylor show at Kevins and thought it looked like the same address. They have much there?? I called Music Depot and they said they moved.?

Anyhow, about the guitars.. I havent seen nor played the PV. I definately think they are very underated in many cases.. I LOVE Old PV guitars.. But, let me not stray. haha

Id get whichever feels like the better axe to you.. pv doesnt get much love on the forums..

Thats probably pretty good advice. Since I don't buy expensive guitars, I tend to sweat the small stuff. Oh well.

Yeah, if you go to their old location on Ramona, next to Office Depot, just go back out to Ramona, turn right, and go 'til you deadend into Lennox. Look to your right. That's Kevins'.

Yeah, once again. They dubbed me "Peaveyologist". :D

I want the Peavey, but I think I'm gonna snag the LP 100. Go figure. Nothing's written in stone . . . yet. ;)

For what they're going for, you can get yourself a ESP LTD EC-50 FM or a ESP LTD Viper-50 FM which are much better sounding and better built guitars. Go to Musician's Friend.com .

$120.

Bolt on, maple neck/alder body, but it's an arch top and has trapezoid inlays.

For $20 more, you can get it in black or gold with body binding.

Yep. Pick one that feels right to you, and you'll have a good shot at making it a nice little player.

My LP-100 sounds better than it has any right to, I guess. I glued the neck in and had a bone nut put on. And it has a '59A2 neck, and an A2P bridge. It's a Korean one from maybe eight years ago.

I generally don't like "Les Pauls" that are not proper Les Pauls. But to me, the Epi just looks like a really cheap Les Paul as it has a bolt on neck (which isn't BAD, but a LP SHOULD have a set neck in my opionion) and lacking the proper inlays and binding. Had it been more like a LP Junior or something the missing inlays and binding would have been fine as it then had been SOMETHING ELSE than a Les Paul Standard, but now it just looks like a cheap Les Paul Standard WANNABE (to me that is). The Peavey looks a bit different to a Les Paul, and therefore doesn't scream as much "cheap ripoff" to me. But I admit that I am shallow, and don't like playing anything but Gibsons through Marshalls. :)

How much are they going for? You should be able to find something a bit better for not much more money if you look around a bit.
