My one cousin just got his 2x12 (the 100watter) last week-end and it is LOUD !!!
To my ears, it sound like a 5150 with less gain - by that i mean the way it is voiced ! But can easily do the same riff that you wanted to do w. the 5150 !!!
Value for money, it can NOT be beaten !

I almost got rid of my vintage fender head for this amp when it first came out...I eventually decided it's got too many plastic parts ahahaha
As far as tone is concerned it's good. The clean is REALLY clean and the distortion can get REALLY dirty so i mean it's an amp's amp. It doesn't really EXCELL in either category, nobody's gonna say "Damn that is a truely heavenly tone you got out of that cheap little peavey!" but as far as really affordable and versatile tube amps go, this is hard to beat...
That said, if you just want a simple clean tube amp that gets a little dirtier as you crank it, why not look at some old Fender Bassman heads, or a newer Fender Blues Jr. combo? Hell even the 5 watt, one-knob Epiphone Valve Jr. gets awesome tube tone and it's only $99...I LOVE the heavy tones you can coax out of that little box.
I dunno just tryin to give you more options.

Better tubes and speaker make this an ok amp, but cost cutting shows up in the tone. I bought Kac's 1x12 VK to play with while I built my 18 watt. For what it was it was just ok. IMHO, the Peavy Classic(30 and 50) series has better overall tone and is priced about the same.

ahh, i hated this amp. it seemed to me like it was a tube amp for people who just had to have a tube amp and bought it because of the price. I thought Peavey's Transtube series sounded much better. And there is no comparison to the Classic seies. It also seemed like anything they could get away with being plastic, they did. Kind of like 'My First Tube Amp'. A good example of how amps don't instantly sound better because they have tubes in them.

I think my brother sumed it up quite acurately on first hearing our cousin's 100watter . . .
. . . "is sounds soo generic", and i think it is spot on !
But still, value for money the VK can not be beaten if you gig !!! Period !

It's the best value tube amp out there and can do a lot of different things. The cleans sound big and so to the gains...although the gains are voiced to be pretty "metal" but that's not really a bad thing.
