I vote Mark IV if you're a lead player, recto if you're a rhythm player.

Re: Peavey Vs/&/Or Mesa Boogie?

I think all of those amps are decent, except the Peavey Ultra (Never played through one, so I can't comment on it). I have a series II Single Rectifier and I like it a lot for lead or rhythm. I also think the MKIV is an excellent amp, but Peavey makes a great amp for the price. I like the Triple X, the 5150II somewhat and the JSX a lot. For what it's worth, that's my opinion. I also sound like me, no matter what equipment I use and I always try to play before I buy. My advice would be the same as others gave you, play as many amps as you can and select the one that you like the best.

Re: Peavey Vs/&/Or Mesa Boogie?

Try a Single and I'll promise if you're looking for a tight, heavy, aggressive amplifier - there'll be no need to look elsewhere.

PS. GREAT cleans as well.

Re: Peavey Vs/&/Or Mesa Boogie?

I found Mesa's are better for more scooped tones, Peavey for mid-heavy tones. Be weary of the Rectifiers high end. It's got this super grainy quality to it that I can't get rid of for the live of me, and it drives me nuts. It's also not the most articulate amp in the world.
