Peavey Vypyr or what else for bedroom-practicing metal?

Dunno if you guys remember, but I was asking for some 10" speaker combo to do bedroom practice a couple of months ago. I ended up with a Fender Frontman 25R which I dropped a Celestion G10 Greenback in. It was alright... until I heard it side by side it with my EVH LBX through an Orange PPC112 I keep downstairs. TBH, I wasn't expecting it to keep up, but I felt that to get it useable for metal, I had to boost it with my GT-OD, and I still needed a tuner. It was getting a bit more complicated making it work and be inspiring to me than I wanted it to, so I sold it. Well, more like traded it for a Celestion 12" Greenback.

So now I have a spare real-deal 12" Greenback and the need for a bedroom practice amp. I used to have a Vypyr 30 in the past, and it was pretty good, especially on the actual Peavey models, but I wonder how the Boss Katana, Fender Mustang, Line 6 Spider, or Marshall Code compare. My primary focus is metal, and I need the amp to 1. not need a boost (or better yet, have the option of an in-built one), 2. have a built-in tuner, 3. have some sort of 5150/Recto/Soldano-y model, and 3. be cheap and easy to find used.

I don't need it to be loud. In fact, the less watts, the better, because the Greenback is after all a low-wattage speaker. I don't plan on cranking it up, though, so I guess I can be fine with 30-40W.

So what else is out there that keeps up with the Vypyr doing metal?

Thanks!

Well...you can never go wrong with a Boss Katana for what it does for the money. Another thing you may want to consider for "practice" as it has a lot of usability in different ways (again for practice) is the Spark amp. I just picked one up and have yet to unbox it but will tomorrow. I got it for simple practice or to take with me when I am on the road to practice, etc. I could see it filling a lot of spaces as well as being a wonderful learning resource all in one. Look into it, it may work for you. :)

I don't know your budget so I didn't throw anymore options out....though there are several other options you could choose from as well as variable paths you could venture down. Let me know and I will help however I can.

Get the Katana. I have the head, it has a built in speaker. Not great but for practice it's good. You may find you like it for more than practice.

These days, the Katana is the one to beat, really. I think it sounds better than the Line 6, Fender or Marshall. I always liked my Peavey VIP I, too.

Another vote for the Katana, played one, should of pulled the trigger but I didnt at the moment

I have a Katana 50w with an Eminence GB128 (Greenback copy) and it's good for practicing at 0.5W (clean, crunch and brown channel), but my Katana 50w is now in a close back cab so the sound is "tighter". But metal I'm not sure.

hey yall
yeap Vyper is the thang
had the small Vyper, seems light and fragile
got the ViP2 sounds awesome at low volume

Thanks for the suggestions, dudes. Keep 'em comming, please.

Does the Katana have a built-in tuner? I can't seem to find anything about that.

I have an Orange RT20 (20 Watt), which sounds really good.

It has a built in LED Tuner, Built in Reverb, a Dirty Channel and Clean Channel. Sounds great (Can be loud if you want but good for use in the bedroom too).

And only $189 so pretty affordable.

I recently picked up a 100 watt Mustang III v2. Sounds awesome at whisper volumes and cranked.

BTW, got it used for like $150. Had the small Vypyr before that, the Mustang is in a whole different class. My Super Reverb hasn’t been plugged in since I got the Mustang.

The katana is amazing. The vypers are good. My favorite bedroom metal tone is the roland xl40. It's got a built-in 90-second looper as well.

Any decent modeler and\or metal pedal should get you there. Mustang, Katana, Spark.

Might check out the Will It Chug series on youtube if you haven't. Dude reviews all kinds of gear strictly looking for metal chuggability.

Thank you dude for the replies!

I'm not finding many Vypyrs for sale locally. Just a lot of Spiders. Wonder if the Spiders are really THAT bad.

Isn't the Katana just the up-to-date version of the Cube?

It may be, but it's a lot different. If you like to tinker or play with settings I'd suggest the katana, if you like to plug in and be ready to rock I'd suggest the cube.

I know a guy who loves his spider fwiw.

Katana is the best amp I’ve used for practice period, can gig as well, my ultimate budget rig is a used Ibanez or LTD, a Katana and a Boss NS-2.
