Re: Peavey Windsor Head
Thanks for the responses....I never heard of the Valveking so I right away checked it out at both the Peveay and Harmony Central websites...The reviews for it are VERY favorable....There are people who are claiming it to be comparable/better than high end Mesas/Marshalls at a mere fraction of the price.....For ~$500 can it be too good to be true? I gotta go and check one out at my local store this weekend....Maybe even pick one up?
Not to burst your bubble, but I had a VK head running through a good 4x12 (V30s and G12T-75s) for about a week. At its price point, its great, but it isn't Mesa quality - its not even what I consider Peavey quality (Triple X, JSX, 5150/6505, Classic). I A/B'ed it with some other amps I had at the time; Randall RM100, Mesa Dual Rec, Mesa Mark IV, Peavey Triple X.
The VK didn't outshine any of these, in fact when side by side, you can here a significant difference in the quality of the tone (all preferences aside, just plain "quality" sound). It doesn't have the depth, articulation, clarity, or the definition of higher quailty amps. The mids do not sit well in a recorded mix, like the more well known quality amps.
That being said, its a good amp, it sounds tube, it has a decent amount of volume and features. The one I tested functioned very well, including the switching. I wouldn't discourage anyone from buying one, I would almost say that I wish they had these when I was younger. Although, when I was younger I could get a brand new Peavey Ultra 120 for about $300 and it was U.S. made with 2 and half channels and huge amounts of thump and gain (the predecessor to the Triple X).
