Peavey XXX Clip 6L6 and EL34

6L6 STOCK Sovtek Tubes

EL34 Svetlana Replacements

Sykes really wanted to hear some clips of both tube types in the XXX and Soria wanted to hear 6L6's so I did a quick take on both, each is about 2 minutes of asst. riffs. I hope it helps. I can't tell you how easy this amp is to swap tubes. I popped out the 6L6's, flipped the bias switch and popped in the EL34's and I was done. I can dial it in by ear if I want to which I'll likely do later or I can use a meter if I want to make sure I am not running too hot. I had both sets dialed dead smack in the middle of the dial for these samples. I only did samples of the Crunch and the Ultra channels, you're really not buying this amp for the cleans trust me on that. They're not horrible but they really need a nice little chorus or flange to open them up.

Don't know how much you can really get a feel for the difference in the recording since I am fair at best with a mic but the difference was tremendous being in front of the amp. The 6L6 tubes are bit raspy and a little thin at certain settings, not bad at all but certainly they have that tendency where as the EL34's had a lot more grind and crunch to them and certainly didn't lack in the fullness department. I would actually say that the 6L's were a little better suited for the Ultra channel and the EL's were better on the Crunch channel. For me the Crunch is the reason I got the amp so it is much better for my needs now that I tried this. I'll hang on to the 6L's for now but I doubt they're going back in anytime soon. I'll tell you what the Celestion Century speakers came to life with the EL's in there so maybe I'll keep them after all they were overly harsh on the highs with the 6L's. I actually mic'd up the 2x12 Avatar cab with the stock Sheffield speakers for the clips.

The stock tubes are (4) 12AX7s 2 labeled as EH and 2 with the same markings less the EH logo, 3 are pre's and 1 is a phase inverter/power driver I didn't touch those yet. The 6L6's are marked Sovtek 6L6WXT. The EL34's I put in are Svetlana's which are supposed to be a better tube than the Sovtek's from what I understand so maybe a GT 6L6GE or the Svetlana equal would be a better comparison I don't know? If any one wants to send me some I'd be happy to try them
:D

*** I should add that I used my LP Standard with a C5 bridge for the clips***

The Sovtek 6L6's blow!!! I replaced them in my 5150 with JJ's and that amp sound much better...

The EL34's do sound better but you might want to try a good set of 6L6's also.

BTW, MR.Speed was a pretty obscure choice. Havent heard that one in a while...:beerchug:

GOOD DISTORTION MAN
to me it´s a classical distortion
VERY VERY GOOD.
i though the XXX is more BRUTAL distorton, but i guess you didn´t push the gain knob at max, .... RIGHT?

Ah pretty sweet tone on both bro .. from this end I liked the EL34s more. I usually do, for that kind of tone.

I don't think I went passed 1/2 for any of the clips but maybe one. It has more gain than I would ever use for my stuff. I will make a clip with full gain when I get a chance.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

That was cool! The 6L6 clip didn't work for me, probably just my computer. I liked the EL34 tone though, that was sweet. Do you have a band?

Thanks Biu the 6L6 clip should be working maybe my ISP was slow to respond? I am digging the EL34 sound big time much improved over the stock tubes. I sort of have reminants of a band at this point half NY half FLA makes it very difficult to say the least but here is some old stuff we did -

Nasty Thread

that was great wattage thanx for the sound clips. i still dont know which tube i wana try out when i retube... i like the 6L6s's cuz it has that warm distort sound and the EL34s they just sound awesome wit full distort and great mids. so i dunno... type of music i like to play is that emo **** hahaha but yah THANX again wattage! :headbang:

You said the 6's are better for the ultra and the 34's better for the crunch. If you leave the 34's in are they good enough for the ultra and clean to not bother switching all the time and just keep them in?

Oh yeah I actually dialed back a little of the Bottom on the Ultra channel later on when I was messing with it and it was great. I had left the settings the same when I switched tubes I did no tweaking what so ever at first, my bad. The EL's are so much fuller and it was actually a little flubby with the same Bottom settings as the 6L's I also had the speakers in the Loose setting I find the ultra needs the Mid or Tight for me to be real pleased with it.

The EL34 Svet's just killed the stock 6L6 Sovteks in all the channels, I am much happier with the amp and I was pretty pleased with it already.

That's rockin'bro. Now are those tubes you're sendin' me gonna make my Peavey sound like that?...hehe

Thanks guys, I spoke with Bob at Eurotubes about some options for tubes in the near future to tweak it a bit more. Nice guy, very helpful and a pleasure to talk to. I ordered a few tubes for my orange and I'll see how they go first. If they get me where I want to be with that I would figure I'll re-tube the front end of the XXX as well.

J - Malcolm Young is my target, if I could nail rhythm playing like him I think I'd be pretty damn happy. I heard he missed a beat once, must've dropped his pick;)

i think ill switch my XXX over to el34's next time i get the cash (probably around july). sounds better to me.

Wattage -

Great clips. The 6L6's just have too much edge or harshness for my taste. That's why I took the 6550's out of my Marshall. The break up isn't what I like, and not enought smoothness. Th trade off is that the highs are clearer and more pronounced. That can be good or bad depending on your taste.

The 34's on the other hand sound awsome. You can definately hear that they are slightly darker, which I prefer. You can always brighten things up a touch if need be. Great break up, smooth and a little mushy in the mids which again I really dig.

I also like the little LA Guns riff on the EL 34's :14: . I haven't heard that since last time I slapped it into my CD player. 80's rule! :headbang:

Re: Peavey XXX Clip 6L6 and EL34

i am gonna try this amp when its time to upgrade amps... I now kno i can get that 80s and vintage sound outta it... Buy wat about blues? could the crunch channel ease on the distortion enough to do that? I am more of hard electric blues guy, but i like to tone it down for the softer blues stuff...

I play blues-metal, and I am liking this tone...
