Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

I guess I'm the odd man out here, as I'm definitely of the EVH school of thought (a piece of plywood w/ pedals stuck to it).

For $120 I decided the PedalTrain2 was a bargain.

Between the aluminum chassis and soft case it was a no brainer for me personally. I'm using a chorus, flanger, phaser, compressor, OD and tuner (plus the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power2) so the layout is just right.

Yep. Bought the same board from the same place. Great stuff and excellent service!

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

I've built a couple of pedal boards... and to be honest with you, they were a pain to haul to gigs. I found a reasonably priced one (<$40) at Rhondo Music - aluminum case with a lid - and it makes traveling to gigs so much easier. For the price it couldn't be beat.

I have both built and bought. I bought when I needed something covered. For the cost of something like the one from Rhondo it is hard to build one that is a lot better. But when I needed to have a platform only, it is hard to beat a plywood board and some left over paint.

Sounds like you've arrived at the same conclusion I did years ago - building from scratch is easy unless you need a lid. For me, a lid is a necessity, though. Nothing beats the convenience of popping the lid on, tightening a few latches, and throwing the thing in the truck (van, car, whatever) and not worrying about it.

I built my first few pedalboards (early 80's) from scratch and it was a pain. Later, chasing some fuzzy vision of going into business, I bought about six 12" x 18" flight cases from a local vendor. He took care of the shell, handle, latches, and feet, then I added the guts. I think this is the optimal way to go, and it sounds like you're doing something similar, building a DIY board into an existing case.

Depending on the size you need, and your amount of patience, eBay can supply used flight cases that can be turned into nice pedalboards. Single-turntable cases work for small boards, dual-TT DJ coffins or PA mixer cases work for large boards. Like anything on eBay, do you research, figure out a good price, shop for bargains, and don't over spend.

I made one from scratch (pretty nice) then I lost / stopped using all my pedals around the same time I got a decent amp. PM me if you want it, it's just taking up space.

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

I'm building one myself right now out of lumber from Home Depot, hardware from Ace, and carpet from Mojotone. It MIGHT cost me around $35 when I get done with it, and that's with the lid as well.

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

To save money you should probably just build one. For a power supply, get the godlyke powerall. Its super reliable and really quiet.

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

those rhondo cases look awesome.. you can just drop a power supply but the problem is too me it seems that the pedals are within the case and not flat ...anyone get me?? would it be hard to just have the lid come down on a flatboard bottom instead of having the pedals inside like a suitcase.

also do power supplys make a difference in terms of pedalboards??? do some make more noise??

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

i strongly reccomend building yourself one.......i recently built this one for me:

and you get the joy of DIY plus the fact that it costs far less than buying one.....you can use the extra money to buy a pedal or two :-) :-)

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

Hey cool pedal board. I'm a big fan of the eh mistress, too. Even though it is so big it sounds too good to take off the board. By the way, how do you like the od-20?

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

well, it's a pedal that claims to simulate various distortion boxes (with varying degree of success) ......the problem with most pedals in that category is that while it does offer a lot of sounds none of them is really impressive .....

Re: Pedal Board.... To build or Buy?

I have a Furman Pedal Board, and I like it--after years of using a home-made board.

Best part--the Furman filtered AC-outlets on the board, AND the filtered 9-volt power supply.

I give you DIY guys a lot of credit, but I just don't have the skills or the patience for it. The stuff I'm looking for is far too complicated to be done easily by myself.

My new pedalboard has been ordered, but it'll be a few weeks until production can start. This next one is really my dream board, down to every single spec and Kevin (Pumaboard) is doing all the work, so I'm confident it'll be done right.

Dude, it's a board with pedals on it.... how complicated do you need???

:)

I prefer my pedalboards slanted; the flat stuff just doesn't feel right (which is why I like the Pedaltrains). I prefer extra touches like side mounted power outlets/sockets, extra compartments to hide power supplies, cables and the like. I've gotten sick of tripping over cables live and looking down at my pedal chain with a giant mess of wire spaghetti. In a few weeks that won't be an issue anymore and I'm ecstatic about it.
