Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

Got a custom 59 Bassman clone (hand wired, Mercury transformers, Sozo caps etc..) in a 2X12 tweed cab, probably the bassbreaker cab. The speakers were lame so I put new speakers in it--Celestion G12H30 and Eminence Cannibus Rex.

I've got the Plexitone which sounds great through a few of my amps, but didn't through this one which is going to be my main (big) amp--mostly because of the $$$ invested in it. I wanted to get the Duncan SFX-03 and the Vox Bulldog but I'd have to sell the Plexitone to get both. I'm cool with that as I sell stuff to buy new stuff, figuring I can always get another Plexitone in the future, right?

Well after putting the new speakers in last night, I tried out the Plexitone just for the heck of it. OMG it sounds better through this amp than any other--by far. The combo of the Bassman and Plexitone sounds better than any of the previous Marshalls I had, save the real Plexi which I sold 14 years ago to buy a house (don't even want to go INTO what I sold at that time, including a 1971 Barracuda convertible, sheesh!).

What do I do now??? I'm so confused, LOL. If I don't sell the plexitone I can't get both pedals. Don't you feel bad for me now?

If you were in my shoes, knowing that I've got a Plexitone, would you go for the Vox or the SD pedal first. Which is more different from the Plexitone sound? Or should I just live dangerously and stick with the original plan and explore new worlds at the expense of my Plexitone--for now, because I'll DEFINITELY get another before the year is out.

Stupid question, but if you're now loving the Plexitone through the Bassman clone, do you really NEED the Vox or the SD pedal?

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

If you can, buy the SFX03 at a place where you can return it, like Guitar Center, before selling the Plexitone. Just incase it doesn't work for you. A bird in the hand is worth more than two in the bushes.

Don't all guitar players NEED lotsa pedals, LOL. To answer your question, this is my way of going through midlife crisis. It's a lot cheaper than mortgaging my house and buying a Ferrari or Porsche, which would be cool too, but I can't bring myself to do that. I'm older and I want it all, so I'm treating myself. Equipment is my passion and you're going to be dead for a long time, so while I'm alive, I'll blow a little money and in the future I'll sell what I don't want anymore. I don't spend money on anything else whatsoever so I go a little overboard with music stuff. It's fun.

Yep, that's the plan. By the way, your Avatar is kickin. I love Blackfoot. They had great album covers too. Strikes, Tomcattin, Marauder, Medicine Man, etc....

Yeah, I know where you're coming from. I'm the same myself :)

But if I had a pedal which I love (which I do) then I wouldn't consider selling it to try something which I may not like as much

Just my opinion mate :)

And a valued opinion at that. That's actually the way I'm leaning, which is to keep the Plexitone and choose between the SD and Vox pedals. GC by me has the Duncan but not the Vox. Haven't heard either in person, but the clips are great. I am leaning towards the SD for the simple reason that mkf411 stated, that I can return it. I may also wait a week or so and see if this urge goes away. I used the Bassman/Plexitone setup in stereo with my Valvetronix AD60VTX & Earcandy Buzzbomb 2X12, and WOW. If it wasn't 8pm I would have played for hours.

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

There's only one way to know for sure. Buy, buy, buy, and return or sell what doesn't make the cut. I see guys hemming a hawing for months, and asking a zillion questions, just to make sure they're buying the right thing, and the fact is, you don't know till you own it. The key is to never make a mistake and sell something that's great.

I know some people are saying....yeah, yeah, but I'm broke and can't buy everything I want just to try it. I'm saying that you CAN, because gear is just like money in the bank. It's just like trading cards. I was doing the same thing when I was making $200 a week as I am now. Just don't buy new, and always sell for more than you paid.

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

Definitely, Gear. I'm going to keep the Plexitone. Money here is not really the object, but I do budget and limit myself so that it can CONTINUE not to be an object. I'm limiting myself at the moment to two pedals, now the Plexitone being one. I have to decide between the Vox and SD, and the SD is the easier choice at the moment because it's at a place where I can physically go and get it--and return it if need be. The Vox isn't.

However, if anyone has heard both and can tell me that one is going to sound so close to the Plexiton, it's not worth the hassle, I'd appreciate it.

Quote of the day :bigthumb:

GJ has been a great tutor to me over the past few years & if there's one thing I've learned is exactly this!

I've got a Plexitone coming my way by way of a trade & can't wait to run it thru the Edana:32:

I've got a handful of great ODs that I'm gonna do a shootout of.

For some reason, I love OD pedals :dunno:

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

Keep Rid's monster :bigthumb:

more evidence how speakers can make such a HUGE diff...they can turn a subpar sounding amp into a totally different beast.

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

Tubes and speakers. Man, I remember the first time I put the Plexitone through the Bassman, I was like "this thing sounds eh". Then I put it through an old Univox and a 4X12 loaded with Celestions and I was like "whoah". Now it's even better through the bassman. Just killer.

Rid--you read my mind, LOL. There are NEVER enough dirty pedals. I know the Plexitone is a keeper because I always try to distance myself from a piece of equipment. If I can do it, it goes. If not then I know it's "the one", if there is such a thing. I can't live without it so it's a keeper!

I knew you had good taste. Rock on my brotha!!!

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

I'm quite interested in trying the Duncan SFX-03 myself, but I think there's some sort of legal reason why they're not available over here.

TO be honest, I'm very happy with what i currently have on my board, so it's just GAS I s'ppose :D Although, I am curious about these Plexitone pedals that everyone seems to be talking about :D

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

I Like the Plexitone enough and it solves a Marshall tone problem at lower amp volumes for me,that I'm not even thinking about buying the SFX-03....RID's pedal just continues to please me!

Good clean fun at that!! Couldn't have said it better myself. I have to say that I've been playing for over 30 years, and the Plexitone is without a doubt the best match for my 73 marshall 100w. I've had other OD's sd-1, tube screamers, etc.... but this thing just NAILS the amps tone on 10... and beyond. So organic and... "lively".. like an amp on ten. Totally responsive. Since you like the tone so much thru the bassman (which was the basis for the early Marshalls after all) I think you'd regret selling it. My prob is I have trouble selling stuff. .... And you never know, you might sell something, regret it and find it's no longer available from the manufacturer

Info:
It is about to become our best selling overdrive ever:)
My little black monster seems to be well liked out there.
Makes me wonder sometimes, but I am pleased that people seems to like it.

Rid, I don't know what hot sauce you sprinkled into that bad boy, but I've had mine since Chrismas (a little present to myself lol), and I still will stop in the middle of playing and go "God this sounds good!! I've been looking for something like this for YEARS!!! Thank you thank you thank you!

Re: Pedal dilema--PLEXITONE STRIKES AGAIN!

Thanks for the kind words:)
Well it took some time to get it right, but as usual it was some small thing, that made it possible to make it sound the way it does.
I am curious how the AC-Tone will fare, it is a lowgainer and more in the ts-style realm, but not as boxy and muffled, have a few more "funny" things in the testmill.
