Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

ok....so what overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedal is best at emulating the Allman Brothers tone... im talkin about the tones on " In memory of elizabeth reed" and statesboro.....that type of lead sound.....very articulate, distorted, but still "clean" if you know what im sayin...

id be usin a les paul type guitar with humbuckers into my Fender Twin into a MArshall 4X12 cab.......and soon will be aquiring a 70s marshall

i dont know that they used any pedals, but what could give me this type of sound? im not lookin for a ton of gain, and definately no buzzy stuff

tubescreamer??

Re: Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

i think an attenuator might serve you some good. I was cranking a blues junior today and it reminded me sort of that.

Re: Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

yeah, I'm not sure there's an "Allmans in a box" pedal ..

but, as proxy noted, a Blues Junior can emulate that tone ... there were some pretty good clips on the Les Paul forum that someone made playing Allmans stuff on a B Jr with a JBL speaker

Re: Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

any suggestions anyways? im not wanting to completely nail the sound, but something similar to that southern rock type of sound, Allman Brothers, skynyrd....

i guess their tones are not really so "special" but they are just homey and natural, they dont sound artificial like a distortion pedal....... i guess thats more of what im looking for...... a more natural sounding pedal that blends with the amps tone rather than completely changing the sound of the amp to a overly distorted mess..

Re: Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

Duane used JBL Speakers in his marshall cabs. That was a big part of his
tone (articulate and Smooth) When he was a session guy (pre ABB)
at Mussel Shoals, He used a 54' strat and a twin with a Fuzzface. BUT !!
He didn't use the fuzzface for fuzz ? He would collect almost dead
9v batteries and put it in the fuzzbox. He didn't switch the Box on.
Instead the dieing battery caused distorion.. Like a makeshift
pre-amp :cool3: A Tube screamer Should fit the bill. I played a lot
of ABB & Skynryd in bands I was in useing a Strat w/t a Humbucker
in the bridge,Tube screamer into my Twin. I'd say I got very convincing
southern rock tone with that setup.

Re: Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

Duane used a Les Paul, 50 watt Marshall head and Marshall bottem with JBL's, sometimes with the back of the speaker cab open. No pedals.

You don't need or want a pedal for that tone: learn to do it with your hands, heart and soul...that's where that tone comes from.

I think a nice Les Paul and a nice tube amp is all you'll need if you have the chops...and the soul.

Les Pauls(SGs) through cranked "Plexi" Marshalls and cabs loaded with JBL130 speakers....Probably something in the lines of a Tube Screamer could get you in some sought of a ballpark I guess?

Re: Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

There's a pedal called the Rustdriver by HAO that attempts to emulate a cranked Plexi. I just picked one up used for a nice price and I'll try to post clips soon. It's a good pedal, but I'm not sure it will give you exactly what you are looking for.

A guy on the LPF really gets nice Duane tones with a BF Pro Reverb w/ JBLs...I can't think of what his nick is (it might be EdA). It might be worth searching for that info, as I think he uses a Barber pedal to help him reach his tonal goals. He plays in an ABB tribute band so I think he might be worth emailing.

this is rarely ever said to lew, but your wrong. he did use a pedal. kcm hit it right on the head. check out the faq on the bro's site or check out there forum.

also, there are some instinces durring some of the live shows, such as the fillmore shows, where you can hear the pedal go on and off....

Actually they use a Boss mt-2! And I'm not even kidding.

I don't think the MT-2 was around when Duane was alive!! This is describing Warren Haynes rig, which is an old setup
Me thinks the old tried and true Les Paul/SG and Marshall setup, with one of those coily cords will do it,
And a Corocidian bottle

We're talking the early and original ABB though from the jist of the posts..Warren and Dereck do use more modern gear for sure...Duane and Richard used Fender Twins and Plexi Marshalls so it depends on which ABB era we're talking? There were several incarnations of this band with several guitar players stepping in and out over the years...I always felt that "The Allman Bros"were the Fillmore version and when we're really talking tone,we're talking Richard and Duane's straight into an amp tone...Warren and Derek are great players with great tone also...Are we talking a wah possibly as far as a pedal because I don't recall them using pedals other than a wah?

Exactly...Some of the forum members weren't around for the original ABB lineup...And now I'm really feeling my age all! :smack: :yell: :)

Re: Pedal for Allman Brothers tone?

la la la la

taken from the FAQ from www.allmanbrothersband.com

"In addition to frequently changing the pickup's positions (top, bottom, or both together) he also liked to use a fuzz box with
the batteries nearly dead so they produced a very soft round fuzz"

this topic has also been discussed many times on the bro's board under the duane forum....

I'd love to see the video buddy...Just tell me what you need to create it and I'll send it to you...I Love the Allman Brothers also in all of their different band member changes, but the early Duane stuff is still my favorite...Thanks for the insight also.. :13:
