Pedals and prototypes.

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

RID, when's your US tour scheduled. You need to show off your wares in person. Awesome stuff.

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

Rid,

How do you use your Marshall direct recording preamp? Can you use it as a direct box in live situations?

Also, how do you like the Marshall "The Guv'nor". Mine is just a backup pedal -- too trebly for my taste. My Shredmaster is heavier and a lot more versatile.

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

Hehe no tour;)
I have gotten quite sick of bands by now...I do the occasional sidekick stuff though.
The Marshall....hmm I only use it for recording at home, it works good for that.
But mine is not stock, modded because it is quite thin and lacks body stock.
The Guv'nor is also modded;)

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

What's the Black Plexi? Is it supposed to give the drive characteristics of a Marshall Plexi?

That would be the general idea yes.
Maybe abit hotrodded...;)
Gottcha. When I saw that name the first thing that came to mind was a JFET emulation circuit based off the Super Lead. You probably know exactly what I'm talking about....lol.

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

No JFET's in there!
I have used FET's for other modded ones, but it is an overdrive circuit.
It uses a +-15volts powersupply, has an oversized powerfiltering, uses 3 5mm LED's for the clipping, have a LF347 quad OP-amp, and is no emulation circuit.
:)

With LED's for clipping that's gotta be real nice. They can give some nice crunch. And with that size power supply, lots of headroom. I may have to keep this one on my checklist.

I've done a few OD's myself with FET's and one with a dual op-amp and that's it. More fun than anything. It's just a hobby for me.

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

Ah ok:)
Yep it is the fun that keeps me going with this, plus it is kinda rewarding getting it to sound the way you want it to.
I spent about close to a year doing this one, plus I am still fiddeling around with it, I have modded a few for customers, one got it with FET's instead, funny with all those flavours:D, we have also made one with powersupply diodes, or a rectified version, that one will see the light of the day on the upcoming Quattro multipedal.
But I have a ocean of overdrives...hehe I think that I have tried everything that can be done to this circuit.
Now we are experimenting with cascading stuff, the Crushzone distortion that is coming now, has something similar going on.
Wiring it stuff that way, gives everything a whole new way of doing it.

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

That's the problem I have too, I can't stop tweaking them. I sat one night with a pile of caps and resistors with my breadboard and just kept swapping values in and out until I found what I liked. Then I did it again two nights later....lol. The madness never ends.

The one that I am really happy and proud of is my booster. It's nothing special, just a FET version of the first gain stage in a Marshall, but it really adds a nice boost. I'm using it more than my overdrives. I got the idea from Runoffgroove's Fetzer Valve.

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

Hehe yeah, boosters can make something of a difference to the general sound.
The last drive we made has a booster functioning as a endstage.
We made a stand alone of it as well, even at very low volumes it almost ripped out harmonics of the amp, so at level where you can speak in a normal voice to each other, we had a guitar going into feed with very litte gain and volume...kinda spooky:D

Re: Pedals and prototypes.

When I use high gain FETs or NPN transistors I run across that if I don't go through a volume pot first. My wife always says something when I do that. The amp has to be on 1/2 so when I kick the circuit on it doesn't blast too loud. :D I tried the booster at the end thing before too but it didn't work too well. I'm still learning a lot. Been doing the DIY thing for a little more than a year.

Love the tremolux. Played through one last year and it was like my Vibrolux, only a tad clearer and nicer.

Want that Soldano cab to match my Hot Rod 50+, too...
